Who voices Daniela Paguro in the 2021 Disney/Pixar movie Luca? The sea monster character warns her son about the dangers of the mainland, and later tries to find him in the port town of Portorosso on the Italian Riviera. The animated character, with an animated personality, is voiced by American actress Maya Rudolph.
In Luca, Daniela Paguro farms goatfish in the Ligurian Sea with her husband, Lorenzo (Jim Gaffigan). She comedically informs her son (Jacob Tremblay as Luca) that “land monsters” like to “do murders,” and shows off her impressive dolphin impression more than once during the film. On land, in human form, Daniela bears a resemblance to iconic Italian actress, Anna Magnani, who also happened to have a son named Luca and was known for playing strong and authoritative female characters during her illustrious career. In the 2021 Disney+ movie Luca, Daniela makes sure to remind her son that she loves and supports him, and ultimately agrees to let him attend school with his human friend Giulia Marcovaldo (Emma Berman).
As the voice of Luca’s Daniela, Rudolph displays comedic skills that she developed as a cast member on Saturday Night Live. From 2000 to 2007, she appeared in over 150 episodes of the NBC sketch comedy show after previously appearing in the late ’90s movies As Good as It Gets and Gattaca. During Randolph’s Saturday Night Live tenure, she also appeared in comedies such as 50 First Dates, Idiocracy, and Shrek the Third as Rapunzel. She further developed her industry resume with early 2010s roles in MacGruber and Growns Ups, but Rudolph is perhaps best known for portraying Lillian Donovan in the 2011 comedy classic Bridesmaids.
Fans of Pixar’s Luca may also recognize Rudolph’s voice because of her roles in the Netflix show Big Mouth. She portrays similarly maternalistic characters in the Netflix animated series: Diane Birch (Nick’s mom) and Connie the Hormone Monster. Rudolph also does various minor roles in Big Mouth, like the ghosts of Elizabeth Taylor and Whitney Houston.
In feature films, Rudolph has also voiced Precious in The Nut Job, Aunt Cass in Big Hero 6, Matilda and Poppy in The Angry Birds Movie, Smiler in The Emoji Movie, Nanny in The Willoughbys, and Linda Mitchell in The Mitchells vs. the Machines. In addition, she occasionally returns to Saturday Night Live to portray U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, and reunited with her Bridesmaids co-star Kristen Wiig for a voice role in the animated series Bless the Harts.
