Warning! This post contains spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home!

Spider-Man: No Way Home breaks open the MCU’s multiverse, but who is the figure bathed in the yellow light that Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) sees when he looks into the multiverse? Tom Holland’s Peter Parker returns for his biggest solo adventure yet, dealing with villains from past Spider-Man movies such as Alfred Molina’s Doctor Octopus, Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, and Jamie Foxx’s Electro. The multiverse is now well-established in the MCU, and this latest adventure gives fans their best look yet at exactly how the multiverse will manifest itself, prior to 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

The MCU multiverse has long been teased, but Phase 4 of the global superhero franchise has put the focus on it front-and-center with its earliest offerings. Both WandaVision and Loki dealt with multiversal themes, and the latter blew it wide open thanks to Sophia di Martino’s Sylvie choosing to kill He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), a Kang the Conqueror variant living in the Citadel at the End of Time. With his death, the multiverse is now open to invasion from every Kang variant, and the borders between worlds are more fragile than ever. Spider-Man: No Way Home showcased just how fragile they are, with Doctor Strange’s tampered spell resulting in opening the multiverse once more and bringing in villains from previous franchises.

However, as exciting as the multiverse villains that were seen on screen are, there is also a great deal of mystery around those figures whose identity remains a little bit more unknown. For example, during the climactic final fight scene atop the new Captain America-inspired Statue of Liberty, Strange attempts to prevent the multiverse from breaking open. As he does so, a number of cracks in reality begin to appear, and as per the botched spell, every multiversal figure that knows Peter Parker is Spider-Man is being brought through. It is an infinite number of individuals, but one stands out as being bathed in bright yellow light. This figure could be any one of an infinite number of individuals that know Spider-Man’s true identity across the entire multiverse, and indeed could therefore be anyone from the Marvel multiverse. However, upon closer inspection, the figure in the yellow light appears to be wielding a spear of sorts and could be said to be wearing furs. There are few characters that fit this description, and fewer still with a confirmed movie coming out in 2023; the character it could be is Kraven the Hunter.

One of the few characters from Marvel lore that is primarily associated with Spider-Man, matches the description of spear and furs, and has a movie coming out in the near future is the Unhuntable Sergei himself, Kraven the Hunter. Debuting in August 1964 in The Amazing Spider-Man #15, Kraven the Hunter was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko and is typically portrayed as a renowned big-game hunter who desires nothing more than to prove himself as the world’s greatest hunter. A frequent foe of Spider-Man, Kraven the Hunter was also one of the founding members of the original Sinister Six. In 2018, a solo Kraven the Hunter movie was announced as part of Sony’s plans for its Spider-Man universe, with various names joining the project since then. 2020 saw J.C. Chandor join as director, with Matt Holloway also joining to rewrite the script. The biggest casting news for the movie came in May 2021 when it was revealed that Aaron Taylor-Johnson would be playing the titular hunter, marking his second Marvel role after Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver in Avengers: Age of Ultron.

While few details about the movie are present as yet, seeing Kraven the Hunter as a figure in the multiverse makes sense given his connection to Spider-Man lore and his upcoming solo movie in January 2023. Doctor Strange sees multiple figures ready to break through during Spider-Man: No Way Home’s reality-cracking final act, but the apparent appearance of furs and a spear would certainly suggest that one of them could have been a tease for the upcoming Kraven the Hunter solo movie.
