One of the missing Titans in Godzilla: King of the Monsters – Tiamat – appears to be directly responsible for the death of a Kong ancestor and a former rival of Gojira. In the 2019 movie, it was confirmed that well over a dozen MonsterVerse Titans are being monitored at Monarch outposts spread out across the globe. One of them is a creature Monarch has labeled “Titanus Tiamat”.

During Ghidorah’s rampage, audiences were introduced to hidden MonsterVerse Titans like Behemoth, Methuselah and Scylla, but the other 11 Titans listed on the map weren’t shown. Although, they did emerge from their resting places offscreen. Tiamat, Yamata no Orochi, Mokele-Mbembe, Quetzalcoatl and the others were awakened by Ghidorah to serve him as the alpha, but presumably fell in line behind Godzilla when he dethroned their leader. What actually happened to them hasn’t been discussed in any of the movies, nor have they appeared in the flesh. However, Tiamat and Amhuluk did make appearances in the Godzilla vs. Kong prequel novel, Godzilla: Dominion.

An interesting reveal came when Godzilla was seeking out one of Kong’s ancestors in a Hollow Earth tunnel. Apparently, this particular member of Kong’s species defeated Godzilla in his youth. In the present day, Godzilla revisited his old domain, where he encountered Tiamat, a massive sea serpent whose name connects her to a water goddess from Babylonian mythology. Spotted in the cave with Tiamat was the skull of Godzilla’s former foe. This panel implied that Tiamat invaded the lair thousands of years ago and killed the giant ape. In a comment on an Instagram post, Dominion author Greg Keyes said that the ape’s death at the hands of Tiamat occurred when the Kong ancestor had become old.

Looking at the fight that Tiamat put up against Godzilla, the Titan having the capability to kill a member of Kong’s species (at any age) isn’t that surprising. Tiamat physically challenged Godzilla and even held the advantage against him when they were in the water. Earlier in the book, Godzilla easily bested Scylla and Amhuluk but had to put forth some effort to make the serpent bend to his will. For this reason, it’s understandable an old Kong would fall to such a powerful creature.

Kong’s kind having history with Godzilla: King of the Monsters’ Tiamat is just one example of all the Titan rivalries that exist in the MonsterVerse. Apparently, Kong’s ancestors were at odds with Godzilla, the Skullcrawlers, Tiamat, and most likely other Titans too. As for the modern-day Kong, he’s now crossed paths with Godzilla and the Skullcrawlers but has yet to meet Tiamat. If the serpent ever wanders down into the secret Hollow Earth world and meets its new king, he could find himself on the losing side this time around.
