Why Apple Is Avoiding iPhone Switch From Lightning To USBC

Apple is in no rush to make an iPhone switch from Lightning to USB-C and there are a couple of reasons reportedly behind the company’s resistance. While it would seem somewhat inevitable that Apple would eventually have to make the switch, it seems the company might be preparing to just skip a USB-C iPhone altogether.

Prior to the launch of a new iPhone each year, speculation always mounts on whether this year will be the year when Apple does away with the Lightning port in favor of a USB-C port. Doing so would benefit consumers considering USB-C is now a widely adopted specification, and would allow iPhone users better compatibility between their Apple and non-Apple devices and products. However, Apple has remained resistant to the switch even though the company does include a USB-C to Lightning cable in the box with all iPhone 12 models sold.

According to comments by Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, and reported by MacRumors, Apple does not plan to add a USB-C port soon. In fact, Kuo even suggests that Apple might opt to skip USB-C altogether. Instead, choosing to go with a portless iPhone that relies on MagSafe for its charging needs. The problem is, MagSafe is still so new that a transition of this type remains some time away, further leading to the suggestion that Apple will simply stick with Lightning in the meantime.

Why Apple Is So Reluctant To Switch To USB-C

There were two main reasons given why Apple is holding off and may even skip USB-C altogether. The first is the quality of the waterproof protection offered through USB-C, compared to Lightning. If waterproofing is a major concern for Apple, then it would make sense for a move to a portless design, as the reduction in the number of openings on the device would improve water resistance dramatically. However, the other reason is probably the real reason behind the reluctance, and that’s the company’s MFI program.

Apple’s ‘Made For iPhone’ program is just that. A system setup to promote and sell products made are specifically made for iPhone. It is understood to be a lucrative business for the company and Kuo was quoted as saying a switch to USB-C would be “detrimental” to Apple’s MFI business. Considering the degree of compatibility between Apple devices and MFI products, that would make sense. Once again, the portless design would seem to solve this concern perfectly, as charging would then be dependent on MagSafe. Like Lightning, MagSafe is another example of Apple’s MFI business approach and would neatly take over from Lightning, without having to involve USB-C along the way.
