Out of all the people who were given the Super Soldier Serum in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, why is Captain America (Chris Evans) the strongest? In the midst of World War II, Abraham Erskine (Stanley Tucci) created the potent chemical solution that’s supposed to enhance the human body and mind. After a rigorous process, Steve Rogers was chosen to be the recipient of the formulation, creating him as the Captain America fans know and love in the franchise.

With his genuine desire to serve his country and inherent goodness, Steve Rogers was personally chosen by Erksine, despite other candidates being more battle-capable and physically stronger. Shortly after Steve was injected with the Super Soldier Serum, the scientist was assassinated by HYDRA. Since then, there were several attempts to re-create the potion used on Steve, for varying reasons. Most notable from the bunch, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan), The Winter Soldier, who operated as an assassin for HYDRA. Others who received a version of the Super Soldier serum are Johann Schmidt/Red Skull (Hugo Weaving), the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), and Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennett).

Out of all the characters who were given the Super Soldier Serum, Captain America remains to be the strongest of them all. Looking at the history of the concoction in the MCU, there are several reasons why this appears to be the case. Firstly, no one has been able to perfectly re-create Erskine’s perfect mixture. There were close replications, including Arnim Zola’s (Toby Jones) which he used on Bucky. Howard Stark (John Slattery) was also able to make his own version which HYDRA later used to create a team of superhuman assassins, but unlike Captain America, they suffered mental side effects and causing them to be permanently sidelined. The same can be said on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s incarnation of the Super Soldier Serum known as the Centipede Serum which included a string of other components like the Extremis.

Secondly, Captain America is the only rightful receiver of any versions of the Super Soldier Serum. This means that he not only had the perfect version of the potion, injecting it into him was also properly prepared for. They had the paraphernalia and trappings needed so his body fully and effectively absorbs the concoction. Finally, as Erskine explained, he designed his creation to enhance what’s already within. He further expounded on this idea when talking to Steve while recalling what happened to Schmidt and the HYDRA leader’s botched attempt at becoming a superior man. According to Erskine, aside from the Super Soldier Serum still being unready when Schmidt used it, the formula is also supposed to “enhance everything that is inside so good becomes great; bad becomes worse.” This is why it’s very important for the scientist to choose someone who’s inherently good as Steve despite his physicality because the serum can physically transform him, but it cannot change a person’s heart.

It’s worth noting, however, that while Hulk did receive a version of the Super Soldier serum in The Incredible Hulk, the potion isn’t essentially the only source of his physical abilities like Captain America. The serum effects and Betty Ross’ (Liv Tyler) myostatin primer, coupled with the immense amount of gamma radiation, all resulted in Bruce Banner transforming into the green rage monster.

While Steve Rogers is technically no longer Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe following Avengers: Endgame, the franchise will continue revealing more information about the Super Soldier Serum via The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. The upcoming Disney+ show is set to introduce Isiah Bradley who’s part of the U.S. government’s attempt to create the potion following Captain America’s apparent death in the comics.
