After losing her powers to the Mind Flayer at the end of season 3, Eleven is nowhere to be found in the Creel House teaser for Stranger Things season 4. Set in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana during the 1980s, Stranger Things draws inspiration from its period setting in many ways, from music to costuming to movie influences, with a particular focus on horror, science fiction, and family adventure films. The series has been a great success for Netflix, proving popular with wide swaths of viewers and winning critical appreciation.

Although Will Byers and his continued misfortune are key elements in driving the plot of the first two seasons of Stranger Things, Eleven’s struggles with her powers and burgeoning socialization are central to many of the show’s mysteries and relationships too. This is reflected in her popularity, with Millie Bobby Brown’s performance becoming emblematic of the series. This has also resulted in a more pronounced narrative arc, the most recent of which saw her end season 3 sans powers as she packed up and left Hawkins with the Byers family.

In the teaser trailer, after a sequence showing a family moving into Creel House some time in the past (with grisly results), Nancy, Robin, Steve, Dustin, Lucas, and Max explore the now-abandoned structure, which features – among other haunted house cliches – an ominous grandfather clock. Eleven is noticeably not present with the group, nor was she present for a previous teaser that featured a beleaguered-but-alive Jim Hopper laboring on a Russian railroad. But another trailer showing scenes from inside Hawkins Laboratory suggests she and her backstory will be integral parts of the upcoming season, making her absence from the Creel House teaser trailer an interesting, doubtlessly intentional choice.

It is worth noting that Will and Jonathan are also not present in the teaser and given that the brothers and their mother Joyce left Hawkins at the end of season 3, it’s possible they might be off on their own side adventure. Seasons 2 and 3 made a point of exploring the new dynamics created by pairing up otherwise disparate characters, with Steve and Dustin’s Stranger Things friendship being perhaps the most popular example. Eleven leaving with the Byers family, while serving primarily as a heavy emotional beat, also seems to set up a similarly novel alliance.

Eleven’s absence from the Stranger Things season 4 teaser trailer, and its ’80s segment, in particular, feeds into fan theories about time travel which have already been encouraged by the Creel House’s grandfather clock. Much of this speculation has revolved around the Upside Down’s relationship to time and has tended to focus on Eleven. With this in mind, it could be the case she is not even in the same time period as the rest of the gang, perhaps instead dealing with elements of her past directly or exploring the future-Hawkins that some fans believe the Upside Down to be. Or, given that earlier scenes of the family at the Creel House look to take place in the ’50s, she may even be in the same location as the others but a few decades prior – whether intentionally or not. Wherever or whenever she is, Eleven will still play a large part in season 4 of Stranger Things.
