Why Ellie [SPOILER] At The End Of Last of Us 2

[WARNING: Spoilers for The Last of Us: Part 2 below]

Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us: Part 2 finished with a controversial ending in which Ellie decided not to kill Abby at the last moment, but for many players, the reason she did so remained perplexing and unclear. There’s no single answer, but rather, a series of complex realizations Ellie had towards the end of the divisive sequel.

Following Joel’s death at the beginning of the game, Ellie sets out on a quest to kill Abby in revenge for taking away her father figure. She eventually tracks her down but only manages to narrowly escape with her loved ones when Abby surprises them in the theater, though their group still took casualties.

It finally seems like Ellie has let go of her taste for revenge by the end of the game when she’s seen living in a farmhouse with Dina and her son JJ. But when Tommy comes to give her a lead on Abby, she jumps at the chance to hunt her once again, leaving Dina and the child they were raising together. Given how much Ellie gave up to find Abby, including putting up with the Rattlers, it’s a wonder why she decided to let it all go and allow Abby and Lev to escape at the very end of the game.

The Reasons Ellie Had For Letting Abby Get Away

Why Ellie [SPOILER] At The End Of Last of Us 2

Ellie grew and changed a lot over the course of The Last of Us: Part 2, but it seems that she especially developed after stumbling across the Rattlers and seeing the torture and humiliation they put their captives through, including Lev and Abby. When she sees Abby tied up on the pole, she has a different perspective of her for once. Abby is weak and vulnerable; she’s not the idyllic monster Ellie has in her head of the woman who claimed Joel’s life. Then seeing Abby cut down Lev again reminded her of the humanity in Abby. She realizes the two of them are more similar than she expected; they both have loved ones that depend on them and need them. Perhaps in this moment, Ellie started to regret leaving Dina.

But even more than that, Ellie likely realized that this isn’t what Joel would’ve wanted for her. To kill someone when they’re so weak and emaciated, and even more, to leave Lev orphaned and alone, would have been contrary to what Joel did for her. After all, Joel saved her from the Fireflies when her life was on the line and assumed a protective, father-like role. When Ellie is beating Abby, the look on her face implies that it doesn’t feel as satisfying as she had expected it to. Through that, not only did Ellie realize that this wasn’t going to bring back Joel (or honor his memory in any way) but it would only be contributing to the cycle of violence. Abby killed Joel because he killed her father. Who would be killed next if Ellie was to kill Abby? She realized that it was never going to end if she kept contributing to the cycle, so allowing Abby to escape was symbolic of her finally letting go.

It may be confusing why Ellie chose not to kill Abby after everything in The Last of Us, but it seems as though she finally realized why it wasn’t the right thing for her to do.
