In Avengers: Endgame, Captain America (Chris Evans) traveled back in time and nearly lost a fight with a younger version of himself, but how? This certainly seems like a fight that the Sentinel of Liberty should have been able to win.
After the Avengers discover that they can use Pym Particles for the purpose of time travel, they devise a plan to travel back in time and gather up the six Infinity Stones so that they can use them to undo the snap. The Avengers split up, with Captain America, Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) revisiting the Battle of New York in 2012, which took place in The Avengers. Blocking Cap’s efforts to get his hands on the Mind Stone from Loki’s scepter is Captain America himself. Steve is forced to fight his 2012 counterpart. Ultimately, Steve walks away with the Mind Stone.
While Captain America got what he wanted from the encounter, he almost came up short. In fact, there was a moment when it appeared that Steve was going to lose. The 2012 Captain America had Steve in a compromising position when he had his arm around Steve’s neck. There’s a ten year age difference between them, but it’s hard to believe that age has held back a super soldier like Captain America, at least not at this point in his life. One possible explanation for his near defeat is Steve’s emotional state. Endgame shows that Steve’s attitude has gone through some visible changes. If Cap went “soft”, a more disciplined fighter (like the 2012 version of Captain America) could have gained the advantage over him. However, Cap’s fight with Thanos sheds some doubt on the idea that Cap could have lost his edge.
Combat experience is also a factor here. 2012 Captain America, who is fresh out of World War II, is on top of his game, whereas Endgame’s Steve Rogers may have been less active when it comes to fighting. Not much is known about what Captain America was up to during the five-year time skip between Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Either way, Captain America’s inability to beat his younger self stands in sharp contrast to the comic book character, who has a long-held reputation for devoting most of his spare time to training and honing his skills.
Ultimately, the only thing that saved Cap was when he mentioned that Bucky (Sebastian Stan) was still alive. The comment shocked 2012 Cap long enough for the present-day Steve Rogers to defeat him. Without this bit of trickery, he would have lost. On the surface, losing to a younger Captain America doesn’t fully make sense since the 2012 version was theoretically more inexperienced, but it highlights just how good he was all the same.
