Godzilla Vs. Kong revealed that Godzilla never attacked Kong before the events of the MonsterVerse mash-up film because Monarch was protecting the great ape on Skull Island. Set a decade after Godzilla appeared and saved the world from MUTOs in 2014, Godzilla Vs. Kong also takes place three years after the events of Godzilla: King of the Monsters when the radioactive lizard quelled a global rampage by his fellow Titans and defeated the three-headed alien dragon, King Ghidorah.
Kong’s story was told in 2017’s Kong: Skull Island, which was mainly set in 1973 although there were also flashbacks to World War II. Kong was revealed to be the youngest and last of a line of ape Titans that protected the island from Skull Crawlers, which emerged to the surface from the Hollow Earth at the center of the planet. Kong was only 100 feet tall almost 50 years ago, but he’s grown much larger since then. More importantly, the agents of Monarch who first encountered Kong in the 1970s came to regard him as the benevolent king of Skull Island and they kept his existence a secret until after Godzilla appeared in 2014, which set off the world’s discovery of the Titans.
In Godzilla: King of the Monsters, King Ghidorah’s awakening set off a chain reaction of the rest of the Titans rising, and the other monsters began to follow Ghidorah as their alpha and apex predator. Godzilla’s quest in King of the Monsters was to eliminate Ghidorah and re-establish himself as the top Titan. This is what happened after Godzilla, with the help of Monarch, killed Ghidorah in Boston at the conclusion of King of the Monsters. The other Titans that Ghidorah summoned saw Godzilla’s triumph and bowed down before their king. However, one Titan didn’t appear in King of the Monsters and didn’t pay homage to Godzilla: Kong. Godzilla Vs. Kong gives the reason why the two biggest names in the MonsterVerse were kept apart until now.
Godzilla Vs. Kong dropped the bombshell that Monarch kept Kong in isolation for years. In fact, Monarch built a massive containment dome over the entirety of Skull Island to protect Kong from Godzilla. Monarch’s fear was that Godzilla would seek Kong out to make him acknowledge his supremacy, but Kong is a proud king who bows down to no one. Further, there’s evidence of an ancient rivalry between Kong’s species and Godzilla that would fuel their animosity.
Monarch also built the containment dome, in part, because a storm had wiped out the indigenous people who lived on Skull Island years ago. In a way, Monarch was keeping Kong company, and he was befriended by humans like Dr. Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall) and her adopted daughter, Jia (Kaylee Hottle), who taught the massive ape sign language. Since Kong is the last of his kind and is considered a friendly Titan by Monarch ever since the events of 1973, protecting him from Godzilla was a top priority.
Of course, when a team from Apex Cybernetics led by Dr. Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgard) decided to transport Kong to Antarctica and use the ape as their guide into the Hollow Earth, Godzilla made good on the threat of attacking Kong. During their sea journey to the South Pole, Godzilla intercepted the Apex fleet and attacked Kong, nearly drowning the heroic ape before the humans succeeded in making the monster lizard think that he had won. By the time Godzilla Vs. Kong is over, both Titans declared a truce after teaming up to destroy Mechagodzilla, and Godzilla left Kong alone to rule the Hollow Earth.
