The Guardians of the Galaxy are a much better team than The Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – even the best. It’s true that new superhero teams such as the Eternals and Fantastic Four are set to arrive in the franchise in the upcoming years; meanwhile, several sub-units of heroes are also forming, including Thor’s new squad and Doctor Strange and Spider-Man’s expected team-up. As it stands, however, the universe still only has two formal superhero squads — Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and their cosmic counterparts.
MCU’s Phase 1 was capped off with the assembling of the Avengers in their 2012 film. The Avengers brought together all heroes in the franchise at that time as they banded together to stop Loki’s attempt to invade New York and eventually, the world. Both a critical and box office success for Marvel Studios, it was the culmination of Kevin Feige’s plans for the interconnected Marvel Cinematic Universe, motivating them to move forward with their bigger Infinity Saga plans. Unlike their predecessors, however, the Guardians’s introduction was more streamlined — everyone debuted at the same time in James Gunn’s 2014 film, Guardians of the Galaxy. Despite not getting individual origin stories, the rag-tag gang immediately became fan favorites.
Earth’s Mightiest Heroes may be the franchise’s premier superhero squad, but their cosmic counterparts are the better team. The Guardians have a better camaraderie and overall dynamic; this was clear from the respective solo films. For starters, each member of the cosmic group went out of their way to save their teammates, despite the fact that they had just met. Drax saved everyone during their escape operation, Gamora saved Peter Quill, a.k.a. Star Lord, following the explosion in Knowhere, and then Quill later almost giving up his life for her. Finally, Groot died to ensure the safety of his newfound friends, including his best friend, Rocket Raccoon, during their final battle with Ronan the Accuser. This continued to the sequel, with most of the team refusing to leave Quill despite him being desperate to form a relationship with his dangerous and manipulative father, Ego the Living Planet. In the end, every member of the Guardians were willing to lay down their lives in order to rescue Peter, and had it not been for Yondu, one or two of them may have rescued him themselves.
Looking at the Avengers, however, the tight-knit bond and camaraderie haven’t always been the case — at least in the first few films. Yes, they did save New York and stopped Ultron in Sokovia, but teamwork is not something that comes naturally to the Avengers, who often fight amongst each other, nor have strong personal attachments with each other, outside of a few Avengers, when they’re not working. While a recurring theme in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies is that of familial relationships, with the Guardians serving as a found family for one another, the Avengers have always been a team seemingly bound together by duty and the job. The Guardians’ focus is a responsibility to each other; the Avengers, a responsibility to the world.
This difference in dynamic may have something to do with how the respective teams came together. The Avengers were assembled by Nick Fury with a mission; while some of them got along, major team conflicts inevitably arose. The only thing that ultimately brought them together was their shared cause of protecting Earth from any threats. If not for that, it’s dubious if they would even choose to spend time together. It’s different with the Guardians of the Galaxy, however, as they actively chose their teammates.
All that being said, it’s worth noting that the Avengers team paved the way for the Guardians of the Galaxy and any other subsequent team-ups in the MCU. In any case, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes eventually learned to value each other over time, it’s just that it took them a long time to get there compared to Peter Quill and his gang. It’s the difference between coworkers and family.
