For fans of open-world games with maximized customization and creativity, Minecraft is a hard game to beat. Minecraft has inspired players to build custom servers dedicated to a number of different playstyles. However, the game’s success isn’t the result of excellent updates from developer Mojang, but rather the players themselves who have spent numerous hours creating content in the form of modpacks.

For every Minecraft update that has come out, introducing bees, fish and edible undersea plants, there is likely a modpack which created the same concepts years ago. Edible berry bushes and dried kelp have nothing on the modpack Pam’s HarvestCraft, for example. With 275 different food items and recipes, seeds to create a farm, the ability to craft pots, pans and bakeware, the modpack has lapped any farming and cooking updates Minecraft’s developers could put out. Forestry is another modpack that leaves Minecraft’s official updates in the dust. With an elaborate bee-keeping system, automated energy sources, and additional ores, Forestry offers players a complex crafting system and is a staple in many online server packs.

Modpacks for Minecraft are so popular and vital to many servers that players will often ignore the official updates and play on outdated versions of the game until modpacks have a chance to update. Minecraft’s Caves and Cliffs update is an example of how official updates have added content that is obsolete if players already have mods installed. Copper ore was already added through Forestry; there are better biomes already available in Biomes O’Plenty; and, if players want goats, they can install Animania. Because players already have access to these additions, updating to the newest version of the game feels pointless and doesn’t incentivize them to leave modpacks behind to try the official content.

Minecraft’s Community Has Created Modpacks Better Than Official Updates

Players can also download modpacks that offer questlines for them to follow. These can often be added in a server for players to conquer together or installed for a personal game alone. Official Minecraft content hasn’t added quests, instead releasing other, quest-focused games like Mincraft: Story Mode. Modpacks like SkyFactory, ReGrowth and Farming Valley, among many more, offer players a more fleshed-out Minecraft experience. Whether it is building a civilization in the sky from nothing or delving into a Stardew Valley-inspired farming adventure, players have taken the time to flesh out the bare bones of Minecraft for everyone to enjoy.

Purely aesthetic modpacks that make Minecraft look hyper-realistic are also available, as well as packs that allow the game to run better on most computer systems. With so much content added by the community, unless Mojang releases something entirely unique in an update – like a new boss or an entirely original story option – Minecraft’s modpacks will likely remain the favorite for fans booting up a game. Vanilla will likely continue on as it has been in the past: the bland version of Minecraft. And mod-packs will continue to pave the way to a better player experience.
