The shocking Money Heist season 5, part 1 finale killed off a significant character, and there are several reasons why. Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) is the narrator of Money Heist, getting recruited by the Professor (Álvaro Morte) in the show’s premiere. Throughout Money Heist, Tokyo is a character that does things her own way and isn’t afraid to stir the pot. It’s the reason the Professor brought her onto his team in the first place. In a flashback during season 5, episode 5, Berlin (Pedro Alonso) petitions the Professor to recruit Úrsula Corberó’s character as they watch news coverage of one of her old heists. Berlin notes that she is a “survivor.” According to him, she is “unique” among thieves, and “she’s got nothing to lose.”

The first part of Money Heist season 5 has already introduced numerous twists and questions. In part one, Inspector Alicia Sierra (Najwa Nimri) captures the Professor, but she eventually lets him go to deliver her baby. Her allegiance to the gang or the government will come into question in part two. Additionally, part one of the final season introduced Berlin’s secret son Rafael (Patrick Criado). With numerous flashbacks diving into Rafael and Berlin’s past, there’s a possibility the character can play a significant role in the final episodes.

In episode 5 of the final season of Money Heist, the show seemingly kills off Tokyo. During the episode, Gandia (José Manuel Poga) and other assailants are closing in on Tokyo, Denver (Jaime Lorente), and Manila (Belén Cuesta). A dumbwaiter is the only way out of the situation, but Tokyo is too severely injured to escape. She ultimately sacrifices herself to help the others, taking numerous bullets as the army closes in. Then, when Gandia gets close enough, Tokyo reveals she pulled the pins on grenades on her chest, which causes a massive explosion and apparently kills her along with several enemies.

Money Heist set up Tokyo’s death all season long. In the season 5 premiere, Tokyo explains to Lisbon (Itziar Ituño) that love gets accelerated in heists because every moment could be someone’s last one. It’s an ominous statement. Then, throughout the season, flashbacks introduce more of Tokyo’s Money Heist backstory and how she lost the love of her life in a heist. Episode 5 goes even heavier on Tokyo flashbacks, showing the fateful heist that killed her former love and further hinting that her time on the show is coming to an end. In fact, at the start of the episode, Tokyo basically admits it’s the end of the line. Despite facing a dead end, she makes it clear that she’ll never “drop her gun” and make it easy on her enemies.

Tokyo’s death is her redemption in the show. Throughout Money Heist, Tokyo has been one of the most polarizing characters. She’s often selfish and unreliable, putting her wants and needs ahead of others no matter the consequences. In season 3, she even leaves Rio (Miguel Herrán) on an island to go off and live her life, which eventually leads to law enforcement capturing and torturing Rio after he tries to contact her. However, by sacrificing herself for the gang, Tokyo finally redeems herself. And it might not truly be the end. With dead Money Heist characters constantly returning in flashback scenes, Tokyo’s death may be a way to redeem the character while still keeping her in the show.
