Morgan’s big decision in Fear the Walking Dead worked much better than Rick’s in The Walking Dead season 8 finale. Morgan (Lennie James), who found himself in a situation similar to the one that Rick was in at the end of the All-Out War, found himself making the same choice.
One of the biggest moments in Rick’s life came when he finally had a chance to kill Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). After slashing open his throat, Rick could have let him bleed out, but decided to ensure his survival so that he could be properly punished for his crimes. His decision was met with immediate opposition by some of the other characters, most notably Maggie (Lauren Cohan). But Rick insisted that letting Negan live was the right thing to do. In a speech, he explained that his intention was to build a better world. His new ideas were inspired by his son Carl (Chandler Riggs), who had recently died from a zombie bite.
Fear the Walking Dead did its own version of this moment in its latest episode. To appease Strand’s rebel Pioneers and Sherry’s group, Morgan was prepared to execute Virginia (Colby Minifie) in front of them all. Morgan held his axe to her neck, but couldn’t do what was expected of him. He then told them that he wouldn’t kill Virginia, because he didn’t believe that this had to be the answer. Much to the dissatisfaction of those in attendance, Morgan declared that Virginia and Dakota (Zoe Colletti) would be banished for their crimes. In not killing her, he effectively made the same call that Rick did all those years ago, except his decision made a lot more sense.
Prior to the conclusion of the All-Out War, The Walking Dead delivered several episodes that built up the excitement and fueled Rick’s anger toward Negan. It had reached a point where Rick not killing him just didn’t feel like a real possibility. Considering everything Rick lost because of Negan, it seemed for a while like it was the only way this story could end. So to get Rick to a place where he would be willing to let him live, the show made a highly controversial move and killed off Carl. Experiencing this tragic loss resulted in Rick wanting to make Carl’s vision of the future a reality. The problem with this last-minute choice is that it felt so contrary to where the show had been pushing him for so long. Plus, it was disappointing that the only way for Rick’s change in viewpoint to work was for a beloved character to die.
It was different with Morgan in Fear the Walking Dead. While it’s true that Morgan recently went back to killing, it’s important to point out that he has managed to hold on to the values he’s had since he joined the spinoff series. He hasn’t lost sight of his original goals and the ideas about the community he wants to build for his people. Unlike Rick, Morgan didn’t have to make a complete 180-degree turn when he chose not to kill Virginia. His decision felt completely natural and right for the character. When thinking about who he is and who he’s always been, it’s really no surprise that he decided to let Virginia live. That’s just what Morgan would do.
