Excitement is high for the upcoming release of Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers, which kicked off a beta over the weekend and gave players a chance to experience an all-new adventure that sometimes differs greatly from the familiar faces and places of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel, is an important figure in the comic book world (she’s Marvel’s first-ever Muslim superhero headliner) and thanks to Marvel’s Avengers, it’s finally her time to shine.
Marvel’s Avengers is set to arrive on PS4, Xbox One, and Steam on September 4th, 2020. The game is completely separate from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (abbreviated MCU), meaning that iconic characters like Captain America don’t look like their actor counterparts. The character designs in Marvel’s Avengers have been a major source of skepticism and contention, since fans have associated those actors with those characters for so long.
However, Kamala Khan (aka Ms. Marvel) has never had an on-screen portrayal in the MCU (although a Disney+ show is starting production soon), and that’s great for Square Enix and developer Crystal Dynamics. Because players don’t have an actor to associate with her, Ms. Marvel hasn’t garnered ridicule over her character designs the way other playable characters like Captain America and Black Widow have. She’s a blank-slate character that players can invest in.
Kamala Khan Takes the Lead in Marvel’s Avengers
Kamala Khan has a major and important role in the game too, since she’s trying to reassemble the Avengers after the playable Marvel’s Avengers introductory mission on the Golden Gate Bridge goes horribly awry. She’s also extremely relatable, since she’s a fangirl in a Captain Marvel t-shirt who writes fan-fiction and gushes over meeting her heroes. She loves the Avengers as much as the people playing the game do.
As Ms. Marvel, Kamala Khan is also powerful and has unique, shape-shifting abilities. Her polymorph powers, like Embiggened hands that slap enemies around, are both fun to use and exciting to watch. Because she may be less recognizable to MCU fans than the other playable characters in the beta, she’s a perfect character to grow and learn with, especially thanks to Marvel’s Avengers’ RPG elements.
From a cultural standpoint, Kamala Khan is important. As a Muslim and Pakastani-American, she’s a woman of color who can kick butt and give Iron Man a run for his money. She’s the representation that’s been missing (so far) from the female stars of the MCU, and it’s refreshing to see her taking a major role in Marvel’s Avengers. She’s a character that has long-deserved some of the spotlight, and it looks like her time to shine has thankfully arrived.
