Why Pokémons Crown Tundra DLC Is Better Than Isle Of Armor

The use of DLC expansions in Pokémon Sword and Shield is a big step for the Pokémon series. Until recently, main Pokémon games were released as pairs in each generation. Usually, a third game would follow shortly after containing patches, improved mechanics, and a new Legendary Pokémon. However, Sword and Shield is the first main Pokémon game to use DLC to improve on the base game. While both DLC expansions added new stories and mechanics, Sword and Shield’s second DLC The Crown Tundra did a better job of introducing engaging narratives and interesting new gameplay.

The Pokémon Sword and Shield DLCs both added new areas to the overarching Galar Map. These areas included new NPCs, locations to explore, and a Pokédex containing past Pokémon species not included in the base games. Each of the DLC maps also functions as a new Wild Area and includes numerous Pokémon Dens for Max Raid battles. While both DLCs were meant to greatly increase overall playability in Sword and Shield, The Isle of Armor only included a brief side-story involving the local dojo, a single Legendary Pokémon, and few ways to interact with the area map outside of exploring for raid dens, making the experience dull after completing the storyline.

Unlike The Isle of Armor, The Crown Tundra was able to truly increase the available gameplay options in the base game. The overarching narrative introduced NPCs related to the original storyline and greatly increased the number of Legendary and Mythical Pokémon in Sword and Shield. Dynamax Adventures introduced a new way to engage in multiplayer gameplay while expanding on the original concepts of Raid Dens and Max Raids, as well as including a major post-game expansion with the Galarian Star Tournament. Both of these mechanics are engaging long after the storyline for The Crown Tundra DLC is concluded, allowing players to do more than just wander around the map after completion.

Sword And Shield’s Crown Tundra DLC Adds Interesting Legendary Hunts

The Crown Tundra DLC also added new puzzles for players to solve, including special mechanics for catching Pokémon’s Galarian Legendary Birds. Once located and released, the birds split up and disperse throughout the Galar region. Players must travel to the Wild Area, The Isle of Armor’s map, and search The Crown Tundra’s map in order to locate each one. However, these Legendary Pokémon aren’t stationary as they wait for the player to locate them. Instead, each one requires players to solve a short puzzle in order to intercept them. This is also the case with the other Legendary Pokémon included in The Crown Tundra. These challenges allow players to immerse themselves in the hunt for these Pokémon and it creates a greater sense of accomplishment when the Pokémon is finally caught.

While The Crown Tundra was helpful in expanding the base game for Sword and Shield, there are still many aspects that could be improved on with the addition of a 3rd DLC. While nothing has been confirmed by Game Freak, a third DLC could add the Pokémon still missing from previous regions, include further backstory for popular Sword and Shield characters like Leon, Piers, and Hop, or potentially allow players to battle past NPCs and rivals from previous regions in the Galarian Star Tournament or Battle Tower. Any of these mechanics would expand Pokémon Sword and Shield’s playability and keep it relevant as new games continue to release.
