Why Pokémons Dynamax Cant Happen Outside Galar

Like many recent games in the series, Pokémon Sword and Shield possess unique battle abilities. Dynamax and Gigantamax allow Pokémon in the Galar region to swell in size and deliver devastating attacks to both opponents in battle and wild Pokémon in Raid Den encounters. Unlike Mega Evolution from X and Y, or Z Moves from Sun and Moon, Dynamax and Gigantamax can’t happen anywhere a trainer is battling. Instead, players must be standing over a Power Spot, which radiates the energy needed to enable the ability.

Power Spots can be located in Galar throughout Sword and Shield’s Wild Areas. This includes the Wild Area stretch in the base games, as well as the new areas added by the DLC The Isle of Armor and The Crown Tundra. These Power Spots appear as rocky dens, which emit beams of light when a Dynamax or Gigantmax wild Pokémon is inside. Power Spots also exist under every gym in the Galar region except for Spikemuth, allowing trainers to use the ability during battles with Gym Leaders, as well as during Championship and Battle Tower matches.

From a narrative perspective, some may wonder why Power Spots are only found in the Galar region. Mega Evolution has appeared in several regions, including Kanto, Hoenn, Kalos, and Alola, allowing players to utilize the battle mechanic in numerous settings. However, Power Spots are congregations of Galar Particles, which are emitted by the Legendary Pokémon Eternatus players fight and capture during the events of Pokémon Sword and Shield. Because Eternatus is only in the Galar region, Galar Particles can’t be found throughout the rest of Pokémon’s world.

Pokémon Sword And Shield’s Eternatus Could Leave The Galar Region

While Eternatus is native to the Galar region, it is possible it could migrate to new areas in upcoming Pokémon games. Eternatus has already made an appearance in Pokémon Masters EX, through an event staring Leon in the Pasio region. This has enabled Dynamax for certain Pokémon within the mobile game. However, in the past when Legendary Pokémon from other regions appear in new games, it has been done through things like the Dynamax Adventures in Sword and Shield, or the Mirage Spots of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. These occurrences introduce the Mythical and Legendary Pokémon, but not the turmoil and narrative used to introduce them in their original games.

One of the oddities of the Pokémon series is the inconsistencies caused by the Legendary Pokémon narratives of each generation. Each story presents a world-altering catastrophe the main character must prevent, with a Legendary Pokémon and antagonist team often at the heart of the struggle. Despite the magnitude of these disturbances, they aren’t present in other games of the series, disconnecting the regions and their problems from one another. Pokémon Sword and Shield continues this trend with Eternatus and Power Spots, but it is possible future games could try to unify the world, and connect past narratives together with new stories.
