Why Sniper Ghost Warrior 3s Open World Gameplay Misses The Mark

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 literally opened up the world of the franchise – but sadly the gameplay misses the mark. Sniper movies are a popular subgenre and stand in contrast to most action films, where its often about the hero waiting for the perfect shot instead of spraying bullets everywhere. Its sort of a niche genre, however, encompassing the long-running Sniper movie series featuring Tom Berenger, Jude Law’s Enemy At The Gates and Shooter, starring Mark Wahlberg. There was also Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper, a biopic about Navy SEAL Chris Kyle.

Sniping games have become a surprisingly popular genre too. Titles like Call Of Duty and Hitman often feature sniping sections, while the Sniper Elite series – and its shockingly gory x-ray vision kills – have been a big hit. CIS launched a franchise in 2008 with Sniper: Art Of Victory. This World War II set shooter received almost universally terrible reviews, but follow-up Sniper: Ghost Warrior was greeted a little more warmly in 2010. Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 arrived in 2013 and like its predecessor, featured a mix of stealth and precision sniping. though its reception was more mixed.

While the series has never been a critical darling, it filled a niche for sniping titles quite nicely, and the Ghost Warrior games have sold quite well. CIS decided to up their game with Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 and gave it a Far Cry-style open world for players to explore. This game world features lots of side quests to get lost in and gamers can approach missions with different tactics. The graphics have been given a boost too and it features some impressive looking environments and effects.

Ultimately, gameplay is all that matters and Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3 is found lacking in several areas. The game simply doesn’t offer anything fresh or innovative, and essentially lifts features from other titles, such as using a drone to mark targets or adjusting shots due to wind and weather. Animations and graphics suffer under closer inspection, and while eschewing stealth is an option, trying to run and gun through enemies like its Doom is a sure path to a quick death.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 3’s open world feels too sparse and empty to convince and while it offers a story, its the most generic action movie plot imaginable, even ending on a sequel-baiting cliffhanger. The ambition of the title should be commended as CIS genuinely tried to deliver a AAA title, and while it’s moderately enjoyable, technical issues weight it down and there are better shooting games on the market. The sequel still did solid business and CIS followed it up with 2019’s Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts.
