Here’s why the Knights of Ren faithfully served their master, Kylo Ren, throughout the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but they switched loyalties to Palpatine in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. The Knights of Ren were seldom shown in the sequel trilogy and were at one point hinted to be former Jedi students of Luke Skywalker who followed Ben Solo when he turned to the dark side. Non-movie material gradually revealed the history of the Knights, which existed long before Ben Solo, later Kylo Ren, was born. Their culture and philosophies also explain why they chose Palpatine over Kylo Ren at the end of The Rise of Skywalker.
The Star Wars galaxy is filled with various religions that use the Force or its dark side. While the Jedi and Sith orders are the most powerful and well-known, they’re hardly the only groups to tap into the fundamental energy field (or the corruption of it). The Knights of Ren were a marauding group of powerful dark side users from a variety of backgrounds. Originating in the galaxy’s treacherous Unknown Regions, they pillaged and murdered wherever they traveled, becoming the subject of local folklore.
When Ben Solo became Kylo Ren after falling to the dark side, the Sith Order was believed to have been destroyed when Palpatine died during the Battle of Endor. Though he worshipped his grandfather, the Sith Lord Darth Vader, Solo joined the Knights of Ren, embracing their violent philosophies. Kylo never joined the Sith, even after the resurrection of Palpatine (and thus the Sith Order) was revealed on Exegol, but he did ally himself with the ancient order, as did the rest of the Knights. When Kylo Ren redeemed himself and became Ben Solo once more, his Knights of Ren remained loyal to Palpatine, not only because of Solo’s redemption, but also because they serve the dark side which Palpatine embodied at that point.
The key difference between the Sith Lords and the Knights of Ren is how they view the dark side and how they use it. As their names suggest, the Sith dominate the dark side and intend to use it to rule the galaxy, while the Knights of Ren serve what they believe to be the will of the dark side. In a way, this makes the Knights of Ren similar to the Jedi, who serve the will of the Force and the people of the galaxy rather than rule them.
As the master of the Knights of Ren, Kylo served his master, Snoke (who was an unaffiliated dark side user, as far as he knew), and had a leadership position within the First Order military. Staying true to the Knights’ philosophies, Kylo served the dark side in the form of his master until he found an opportunity to murder and replace his master as Supreme Leader of the First Order, a move that was ironically adherent to the Sith Order’s Rule of Two.
At the peak of his power, Palpatine was far stronger than Kylo Ren or Snoke, becoming almost the embodiment of the dark side. Naturally, this led Kylo and the rest of the Knights to serve the Sith Lord, despite not being Sith themselves (and, as shown in the Crimson Reign comics, having once been enemies of Palpatine and the Sith Order). When Kylo Ren became Ben Solo once more, he rejected the dark side, making Palpatine the only master for the Knights to serve in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.
