Warning: SPOILERS ahead for The Matrix Trilogy.

The Matrix Resurrections hits theaters in December of 2021 and promises a Matrix that’s more powerful than ever. Nearly twenty years after the conclusion of The Matrix Trilogy, Resurrections features the return of original franchise co-writer and director Lana Wachowski as well as stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss as their iconic Matrix characters. With the Matrix 4 trailer release successfully hyping audiences up for the film, anticipation is at a boiling point.

Although the plot of Resurrections is a mystery, the official synopsis released by Warner Bros. reads “In a world of two realities—everyday life and what lies behind it—Thomas Anderson will have to choose to follow the white rabbit once more. Choice, while an illusion, is still the only way in or out of the Matrix, which is stronger, more secure and more dangerous than ever before.” Theories are already popping up as to how Keanu Reeves’ Neo is alive, and why the iconic character of Morpheus is played by Yahya Abdul-Mateen II rather than Lawrence Fishburne. Just as important, however, is the question of why the Matrix is so strong and dangerous after the events of The Matrix Trilogy.

It may sound like an unnecessary ramping-up of an already powerful threat, but the idea of a more powerful Matrix makes sense as a direct consequence of the previous Matrix films. The Matrix Reloaded established the idea that the Matrix itself only worked with a flaw – human choice – and that only through cycles of Ones such as Neo assimilating back into the source code could both humans and the Matrix itself survive. Not only did Neo complete a version of this cycle by the end of The Matrix Revolutions, he also seemingly removed a major threat to the Matrix, and gave his body back to the machines – all facts that could certainly lead to a deadlier Matrix.

It’s worth noting that peace between humans and the Matrix only came to pass due to the danger posed by the former Agent Smith. By Revolutions, the machines became so desperate to defeat Smith that they agreed to spare Zion and the free humans in exchange for Neo’s help. Rogue programs are not uncommon in the Matrix, but it would make sense that the machines would work to construct an even more secure program in the wake of Smith’s near-total takeover. It’s clear the machines in the Matrix universe are highly adaptive, so there is reason to believe the Matrix would be much harder to hack and manipulate in Resurrections’ post-Smith Matrix.

Whether or not Neil Patrick Harris is playing the Architect in Resurrections, the character’s words to Neo about choice are sure to have bearing on the current status of the Matrix. In The Matrix Reloaded, the Architect makes clear that the Matrix survives due to a subconscious choice humans make to remain tapped inside it. At the end of The Matrix Revolutions, however, the Architect states that humans who wish to leave the Matrix will be allowed to do so – potentially making the traditional Matrix cycle obsolete. Without disruptions, the appearance of the One, and war with Zion in the 20+ years since Revolutions ended, the machines likely used peace to further solidify the program holding the humans who wished to stay.

Finally, whether Neo is in prison, a program, or alive in Resurrections, his appearance implies the Matrix may have reached new levels of strength due to the One himself. While Neo was the sixth One in the Matrix cycles, he was the only one to buck the trend of assimilating into the source code. Because of this, Neo’s strength grew – by the end of Reloaded, he could disable real-world machines with his mind, and by the end of Revolutions, he could see source code itself. As Neo was last seen in the heart of Machine City and the custody of the machines, it’s plausible his world-bending abilities were studied reflected to make a less-bendable Matrix. With The Matrix Resurrections releasing December 22nd, things should become more clear soon.
