Godzilla vs. Kong is the last confirmed installment in the MonsterVerse. Though it’s only the fourth movie in the franchise, no more movies connected to Legendary’s versions of Godzilla or Kong are currently in development. In 2015, it became official that not only would Godzilla and Kong share the same cinematic universe, but the two monsters would also come to blows in Godzilla vs. Kong.
The movie will serve as their second big-screen showdown, with their first brawl being Toho’s King Kong vs. Godzilla in 1962. Following multiple delays, the highly anticipated crossover is finally just around the corner. Who will win when the two Titans meet remains to be seen, but director Adam Wingard has repeatedly assured audiences that Godzilla vs. Kong will offer a clear winner. As long as just one of the two rival alphas survives, the MonsterVerse will have room for a sequel. If both live, Godzilla 3 or Kong 2 would become possibilities. However, there have been no reports about either of these films happening, nor has there been any word on a potential spinoff.
Legendary having an empty MonsterVerse slate after Godzilla vs. Kong can be explained by the unimpressive box office performance of the preceding entry, Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Directed by Mike Dougherty, the $200 million movie only grossed $386.6 million at the worldwide box office, which was considerably less than what the studio was expecting. With the 2014 Godzilla and Kong: Skull Island both pulling in over $500 million each, Legendary had good cause to expect a lot from the Godzilla sequel. While it didn’t do poorly enough to be called a box office failure, there’s no denying it was a financial disappointment, and part of that may have been the result of negative reviews.
While Warner Bros. expressed confidence in its franchise following King of the Monsters’ release, it still pushed back Godzilla vs. Kong. It was assumed this move was made so the studio could better ensure the crossover’s success. Unfortunately, the third movie not meeting expectations means Godzilla vs. Kong isn’t a guaranteed hit either. That’s why it makes sense for the studio to take a “wait and see” approach to the MonsterVerse’s future. If Godzilla vs. Kong really takes off, more installments could be announced. Depending on how big of a hit it is, spinoffs for other Titans could be back on the table.
Due to the pandemic, Godzilla vs. Kong can’t make as much at the box office as Warner Bros. would have wanted originally either, despite a lack of competition when it hits theaters. Legendary knows that too, as indicated by the dispute they reportedly had over Warner Bros.’s simultaneous theatrical and streaming release plan. This limitation will of course be taken into account when gaging Godzilla vs. Kong’s success at the box office and on HBO Max. The first movie to follow this release strategy for the studio, Wonder Woman 1984, led to the immediate announcement of a sequel, and it’s possible Godzilla vs. Kong can get similar results. The fact that its movie trailer debut is the biggest ever for Warner Bros. is an encouraging sign, at least.
