WARNING: This article contains spoilers for Loki episode 5.

Loki has introduced a huge selection of variants of the God of Mischief – but why is there only one other variant that looks like Tom Hiddleston? Loki episode 5 introduced President Loki, a suitably conniving figure who was notably also played by original Loki actor Tom Hiddleston. President Loki played the role of a minor antagonist within the episode, but was a relatively unobtrusive entity in the events of the episode, leading many to question why such a short role happened to be given to the only other Loki thus far played by Hiddleston.

Initially, this could be written off as a case of wanting Hiddleston to remain one clear character – but this was later revealed to not be the case, as President Loki simply wouldn’t exist if this was the main concern. Other ideas surrounding simplifying Loki’s often complex comic lore by having visual differences between the variants also doesn’t quite explain this, as the characters don’t seem to be connected to one another in quite the same way as the comic versions of Loki, Kid Loki, and Old Loki were. However, this doesn’t mean there aren’t viable explanations for why only two Loki variants look like Tom Hiddleston.

On a purely practical level, it makes sense to have as many different looking versions of Loki as is possible – partially because a show full of entirely identical characters would prove confusing, and partially because this means the show doesn’t have to constantly be Hiddleston on a split-screen, allowing a range of wonderful actors a chance at one of Marvel’s most fun looking roles. Financially, the MCU’s not inconsiderable merchandise sales means that there’s an extra monetary incentive to add in some marketable Lokis, such as the somehow both cute and intimidating Alligator Loki. Finally, from a plot-focused perspective, it also makes sense that many variant Lokis look entirely different and have entirely different pasts and characteristics – as the entire point of infinite timelines theoretically existing is that infinite possibilities take place within them, meaning it would arguably be stranger if every Loki looked the same.

There is also one final potential reason that the decision to only have one other Loki variant that looks like Tom Hiddleston in the show thus far, and that is the humble matter of misleading the audience. President Loki was a prominent feature of the show’s trailer, and many speculated as to what antics this suggested the character was up to – as, when only witnessing the trailer, it appeared for all intents and purposes like this was showing the main character Loki, not President Loki. This effectively served to put much of the audience off the scent of what to expect from the series, as it implied that the show would focus around the morally ambiguous god attempting to pull yet another fast one on another collection of unfortunates. This in mind, there is the very real chance that his existence was entirely a purposeful red herring, as this would entirely explain why he also looks like Tom Hiddleston.

With the future of the MCU looking even broader than ever before as a result of the introduction of the multiverse, there’s also the potential that President Loki or any of these other Loki variants could play a role in later events. Many have speculated that Classic Loki isn’t dead, and similarly have wondered if Sylvie could outlast the Loki show itself and become a member of the Sacred Timeline’s cast in her own right. One thing is for sure: the future is bright, and it is also more than likely full of Loki.
