Why Wheel of Time Star Rosamund Pike Enjoys Playing Moiraine

The Wheel of Time star Rosamund Pike reveals why she enjoys playing Moiraine Domadred in the fantasy series. Penned by Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, Wheel of Time spanned 14 novels and became one of the best-selling fantasy series since J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. Hailed for its detailed world, complex characters, and impeccably developed magic system, The Wheel of Time centers on Moiraine Damodred (Pike), a member of the all-female organization of the Aes Sedai, as she embarks on a perilous mission.

In 2018, Amazon shook the fantasy world when it announced it would give The Wheel of Time a series order. Helmed by showrunner Rafe Judkins, the show has been in production since 2019. Featuring a massive cast, including Daniel Henney as al’Lan Mandragoran, Josha Stradowski as Rand al’Thor, and Zoë Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara, Wheel of Time is one of the biggest fantasy series slated to debut in 2021. So far, Amazon has released three episodes of Wheel of Time, which highlights Pike as the powerful Moraine. Now, Pike opens up about why she enjoys portraying the titular heroine.

Speaking with EW, Pike reveals playing Moraine has been her most physically challenging role and that she created a physical language just for the character. Pike said playing ominous characters, such as Marla in I Care A Lot, Amy in Gone Girl, and Moiraine is enjoyable because audiences don’t know where they stand. Pike admits Moiraine has a level of physical strength that she’s never had to tap into for a role before. Read what Pike said about why she enjoys stepping into Moiraine’s shoes:

I quite enjoy characters who people don’t know where they stand, because it creates dramatic tension. You can keep an audience on their toes and it doesn’t matter if they don’t like you or they mistrust you, as long as they still find you fun to watch. If they don’t, then you’re in trouble. But also, Marla Grayson [in I Care a Lot] and Amy Dunne [in Gone Girl] were able to weaponize their very dangerous minds. Moiraine doesn’t have that, but she obviously has this tremendous physical prowess in terms of being able to channel the One Power. I’ve never played a character who’s got that kind of physical might, so that was fun for me.

Toting great power and lacking much empathy, Moiraine becomes ensnared in several battle scenes as she searches for the Dragon Reborn. Of course, it seems Pike is committed to translating Moiraine’s powers through physical motions, especially the challenge of channeling the One Power. Speaking on Moiraine’s abilities, Pike said “the physical cost of passing huge volts of electricity through your body” piqued her interest in how to relay those physical endeavors to the small screen.

For decades, The Wheel of Time has resonated with readers for its endlessly fascinating world, intricate weaponry, and powerful women at its core. Hard at work for over two years, Pike appears ready to portray Moiraine in The Wheel of Time for years to come. Wheel of Time season 2 has already started production and could release in 2022. Those familiar with the novels, as well as those eager to dive into a new fantasy series, can witness the magic of The Wheel of Time on Amazon.
