Why You Should Be More Excited About New Pokémon Snap

After more than 20 years, New Pokémon Snap is finally bringing fans a sequel to the N64’s rail-shooter photography game. The games involve players gradually making their way through a level on a set path, tossing apples and snapping photos of wild Pokémon along the way. Photos are then appraised, with more points awarded depending on how many Pokémon are in the shot and whether they are doing any special poses. A lot of excitement has surrounded the new Pokémon Legends: Arceus game, as well as the upcoming remakes of Gen 4’s Diamond and Pearl, but New Pokémon Snap deserves just as much attention.

New Pokémon Snap is something fresh for the long-running, popular franchise. Although each new game tries to build on the previous ones (sometimes leaving fan-favorite features behind along the way), the gameplay of every mainline Pokémon title is largely the same. But players won’t catch any Pokémon in New Pokémon Snap, nor will they battle against other trainers. Pokémon Snap lets players celebrate what has made so many fall in love with the franchise in the first place: the monsters themselves.

It may sound contradictory to say most Pokémon games aren’t focused on the Pokémon; however, at their core, the mainline Pokémon games are about becoming the champion of each game’s region. The titular creatures are just a tool to be used in potentially unethical Pokémon battles. New Pokémon Snap, in a way, is instead a love letter to Pokémon themselves.

New Pokémon Snap Is All About The Pokémon

Many people are fascinated with the natural world and simply observing wild creatures. Considering the multitudes of unique monsters in the Pokémon universe, it would be surprising to find out wildlife photography is a niche hobby for its inhabitants. The original Pokémon Snap features the main character being hired by Professor Oak to take pictures in order to aid his research. The same premise will apply in New Pokémon Snap, but, really, the game wouldn’t suffer from just telling players, “Hey, don’t you like Pokémon? Here’s a camera. Have at it.” Pokémon fans don’t need an excuse to engage with the series in any way possible, and New Pokémon Snap provides just another method for players to get up close and personal with its iconic beasts.

In addition to the game’s passion for Pokémon, New Pokémon Snap is also exciting from a visual standpoint. With photography as the main focus of the game, developer Bandai Namco has gone above and beyond with the graphics. Many Pokémon fans long for realistic graphics, and it seems only fitting that New Pokémon Snap, a game glorifying the Pokémon themselves, has achieved the series’ highest visual fidelity so far – something that can’t be said of the trailers for Pokémon Legends: Arceus or Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
