Why Zack Snyders Army Of The Dead Could Give Netflix A Whole New Audience

Netflix is poised to release an original film every week of 2021, but Zack Snyder’s upcoming zombie thriller Army of the Dead may be the most intriguing of the bunch. While Netflix has experimented with various genres and aesthetics throughout its lineup of original films, the zombie-heist hybrid offers something very few others can: Snyder’s fervent fanbase.

In a recent trailer promoting the entirety of its 2021 slate, Netflix leaned rather heavily on its star power. Leonardo DiCaprio, Ryan Reynolds, Jennifer Lawrence, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson are just some of the major names starring in Netflix Originals this year. What the company neglected to mention, however, was the talent behind the camera. It’s a rather surprising omission, particularly in the case of Army of the Dead, as Snyder brings with him one of the most loyal followings in Hollywood. Not to mention, Army of the Dead may even end up as the better of Zack Snyder’s 2021 films over Justice League.

While Netflix has delivered a string of excellent Oscar-contenders each year with films like 2018’s Roma, 2019’s The Irishman, and the recently released Pieces of a Woman, its genre films have been hit or miss. The company has struck gold with movies like 2018 horror-thriller Cam and last year’s The Old Guard, which already has a sequel on the way with The Old Guard 2. Films like 2017’s Bright, on the other hand, wasted their star power and struggled to gain relevance. As these films and others suggest, Netflix is no stranger to big-budget action films, nor are they unfamiliar with well-established directors. But Snyder has developed a uniquely fervent fanbase over the years, one that follows him just about wherever his career takes him. And with Netflix set to be his next destination, the Snyder fans will surely follow.

Army of the Dead appeared only briefly in Netflix’s 2021 trailer, likely because the film does not feature as many A-list celebrities as some other upcoming Netflix Originals, but it made its presence felt. Snyder’s signature aesthetic was on full display, his muted color palettes and velvety textures immediately contrasting with the rest of Netflix’s 2021 lineup. Netflix has also gained a reputation for providing acclaimed directors with unprecedented creative control (and funding.) After all, Martin Scorsese worked with the largest budget of his career in implementing the CGI de-aging effects of The Irishman. It’s not hard to see why Snyder wanted to make Army of the Dead with Netflix; it’s only a shame that the company is promoting its onscreen talent first and foremost. Of course, this approach is nothing new. And with 2021 offering Netflix’s most star-studded lineup yet, it is entirely understandable. It is also safe to say that Snyder’s most passionate fans are already well aware of the director’s new home. Still, Netflix would be wise to lean on Snyder in promoting the film moving forward.

Snyder is far from the only high-profile director involved with Netflix’s 2021 slate of films. Adam McKay’s political satire Don’t Look Up closed Netflix’s 2021 preview, but the focus was unsurprisingly on co-leads DiCaprio and Lawrence rather than McKay. Euphoria creator Sam Levinson is also bringing Malcolm & Marie, which was shot during the COVID-19 pandemic, to Netflix in February. But even these two established filmmakers do not offer the Army of the Dead director’s unique fanbase. Snyder’s willingness to engage with his audience has always garnered him a lot of respect from viewers, and that’s something Netflix should undoubtedly tap into. Army of the Dead offers Netflix franchise potential, as a prequel and an anime are already in the works. More importantly, however, the film offers Netflix a popular director and his cult following, which is bound to be loyal for as long as Snyder is with Netflix.
