If Rockstar ventures too far into trends such as battle royales and online multiplayer, it runs the risk of heading down the same road as Fallout 76.

If this current generation of gaming is defined by one game, it will be Grand Theft Auto V. Released at the start of the generation, literally at launch, and it remains one of the best-selling games every single week. Rockstar’s tireless work to update the game and add to its already vast online elements not only keeps people coming back but continues to entice more players in.

Even though players still appear to be more than happy with what GTA V has to offer, those same people are still clamoring for news, any kind of news, about GTA VI. Rockstar remains tight-lipped on what’s to come, neglecting to even confirm that there will be a GTA VI. Chances are there will be, and it will be officially announced sometime between now and the release of the next-gen consoles.

GTA fans have faith in Rockstar to deliver. Not just because of what it has done with GTA V, but the work it has done on the series for more than 20 years. However, it runs the risk of falling into the same trap Bethesda did via Fallout 76. Video games are trending a certain way right now as online multiplayer and battle royales are the order of the day.

Rockstar has had so much success with GTA V’s online world that it might be tempted to make GTA VI exclusively online. That would be a big mistake. The franchise’s in-depth stories and creative characters play a huge part in why people love the game. Take that away and a large chunk of the game’s players will not be pleased. Plus, other games have proved there is still a huge market out there for single-player, offline, in-depth story modes.

There are so many shortcuts to success developers can take right now in order to attract a massive player base. The trouble is, that the player base won’t be a permanent one. As mentioned above, GTA has been a mainstay franchise in gaming since the 1990s. That’s due to the fact Rockstar hasn’t followed the crowd and taken shortcuts as they have come and gone. Hopefully, the online success of GTA V doesn’t tempt the developer away from the course that has done right by it for so long.
