Character creation has become an important part of self-expression in the modern Pokémon games. First introduced in X and Y, the ability to change up the player character’s look has offered fans freedom to create trainers they can personally related to. With many skin tones, hairstyles, eye colors, and expressions available in Sword and Shield, character creation builds an immersive experience for players embarking on a journey through Galar. However, this feature may not be available in the upcoming Sinnoh remakes, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
Character creation has disappointingly been unavailable in previous Pokémon remakes. Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire lacked the feature, despite being released right after Pokémon X and Y. Character creation is present in Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!, but it’s limited compared to X and Y and Sword and Shield. Characters can have different skin tones and hair colors, but their face style and expressions stay the same. Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee! do offer different outfits to wear, though, which adds at least some personality.
In the trailer for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, there isn’t any evidence to suggest players will have the ability to change their character’s clothing or toggle skin and hair colors. The games’ throwback art style shrinks the main characters down to small, chibi 3D models, so changing clothes would only be noticeable during battle animations when their full appearances are visible. The Pokémon Company hasn’t confirmed whether character customization will be available, but it seems likely Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will follow the same pattern as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, preventing changes to the player characters’ appearances in order to stay true to the original games.
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Likely Limit Customization
While character customization will probably be lacking, there could be other ways for developers to offer players some creative license. Differently colored item bags could be introduced, for instance, or hats in different colors. While these wouldn’t be too exciting, they would still give some customization options to Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl players.
The Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl remakes have been heavily anticipated leading up to their announcement in February 2021. They will likely include a mixture of modern gameplay and classic concepts as the developers attempt to stay true to the source material without jeopardizing playability. This does mean Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl could miss out on a few recent improvements, but, hopefully, that will be balanced by the return of old ideas updated and smoothed out for an exciting, nostalgic experience.
