Will Pokémon Masters Stand The Test Of Time

Pokémon Masters raked in a whopping $26 million in its first week of launch and its enormous draw from console canon was a huge hit with fans. Unfortunately, due to some loose ends within the storyline and the generally unfinished feel of the gameplay, the longevity of the game’s success remains in question.

Admittedly, Pokémon Masters’ initial gameplay was a bit of a letdown. As is the low rate at which currency can be earned. However, it is hardly fair to condemn a game straight out of its launch phase.

Pokémon games have shown that they are not afraid to continually grow and improve. Pokemon GO players have experienced this first hand. Thus, the incomplete feel to the main quest line could begin to tie up those loose ends at a later date. Not to mention there is loads more canon content that could be incorporated into the game. If nothing else, the game’s real-time online function could be its saving grace. This could allow for a possible PvP feature in the future, which would surely be a huge draw among players aspiring to be the very best like no one ever was.

Fans don’t have to worry. For starters, the Pokémon name guarantees any title some amount of success. Simply baring the trademark and being a ‘free to play’ game will keep Pokemon Masters moderately successful for a while yet. The trademark/free-to-play combination makes the game familiar and accessible to casual players. With Pokemon being such a household name, any release pertaining to it (main series game, movie, or a new season of the anime) is likely to direct gaming traffic to easy-access games of the same brand.

Though initial gameplay may have been disappointing, the franchise boasts a plethora of opportunities for the game’s growth. Pokemon Masters kicked off with a bang and it’s safe to say that its future has potential.
