Will an X-Men DLC be coming to Marvel’s Avengers? The X-Men are one of the few superhero teams as powerful and iconic as the Avengers, but can the two share the same space in Square Enix’s latest release?
Marvel’s Avengers arrives with a small roster of playable characters. Most of the main characters from the movies – Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, and Hulk – make an appearance. The only real surprise to the list is Ms. Marvel, who’s not as well-known and takes the lead role. Hawkeye joins them later as a free DLC, and so does Spider-Man, though the web-slinger is for PlayStation owners only.
PlaystationTrophies asked Marvel’s Avengers creative director Shaun Escayg whether the X-Men will join the roster. He said, “[The possibilities] extend to all of the 80-year history, and the process of choosing these characters is ‘can we ground it in this world and can we make a real argument to Marvel that this character belongs here?’ — this character will move our story forward or take us into new stories.” He goes on to say,” It’s all about how we write it, how we sell it, how we situate it, and how we then bridge that into a new threat or new escalations of threats.”
His answer seems to imply that the door is open for the X-Men to join the game, as long as it makes sense and furthers the story. Any X-Men characters they add will also have to have powers that compliment the team and offer something unique.
So if they decide on adding X-Men, who will they pick? Some of their most popular characters like Wolverine, Storm, Rogue, Beast, and even Deadpool have been part of the Avengers. There are many others like Sunfire, Havok, Quentin Quire, and Cannonball. It makes sense to use the more famous characters for commercial purposes, but it would also be great to give lesser-known characters a chance to shine. There’s even the option of adding X-Men villains to Marvel’s Avengers.
Not only does Marvel have the rights to the Avengers and the X-Men, but they also have the rights to the Fantastic Four and Guardians of the Galaxy. With so many characters at their disposal, they are spoilt for choice and can add anyone from Rocket the Racoon to the Human Torch. Marvel’s Avenger’s drops on September 4 on most major platforms.
