A new clip from The Witcher season 2 shows Yennefer and Tissaia discussing the Battle of Sodden Hill. Netflix’s The Witcher premiered in 2019 and was praised for its action, world-building, and casting of characters from the stories of Andrzej Sapkowski. The series’ popularity has led to a second season—which premieres on December 17—and an already-announced season 3.

Unlike Sapkowski’s The Last Wish, which focuses primarily on Geralt (Henry Cavill), The Witcher season 1 used three gradually-converging timelines to follow Geralt, Ciri (Freya Allan), and Yennefer (Anya Chalotra). Ciri’s story began decades before she met Geralt when Tissaia de Vries (MyAnna Buring) brought her to Aretuza to study magic. At the end of season 1, dozens of mages, along with Yennefer and Tissaia, went to Sodden to defend it against the Nilfgaard army. After being overwhelmed, Yennefer found a weakened Tissaia and, despite their contentious relationship, admitted that Tissaia saved her. Yennefer then absorbed the fire consuming the keep and unleashed her inner chaos on her enemies. Yennefer’s fate following the Battle of Sodden Hill was left up in the air at the end of season 1, with everyone (including Geralt) believing her to be dead. However, promotional material for season 2 has revealed that she will end up being discovered by Nilfgaardian forces.

The Witcher recently shared a new clip of Yennefer and Tissaia in season 2. The clip sees the pair discussing Yennefer’s actions at Sodden Hill at the end of season 1. Specifically, Tissaia wants Yennefer to let Vilgefortz (Mahesh Jadu) take credit for the victory. It’s unclear when/where the interaction takes place, but it could be back at Aretuza. After letting Yennefer go, Geralt finally found Ciri in the season 1 finale. Season 2 will adapt Sapkowski’s Blood of Elves, taking Geralt and Ciri to Kaer Morhen, the old fortress where witchers are trained. There, Geralt will reunite with his mentor Vesemir (Kim Bodnia), fellow witcher Lambert (Paul Bullion), and a slew of other monster hunters. While Yennefer is being held by/escaping Nilfgaard, Ciri will train.

It’s also not clear how Yennefer survived the Battle of Sodden Hill. Or, how she escaped Nilfgaardian forces after they found her in the forest following the battle. Regardless, she makes it back to Tissaia and, in turn, Geralt—unless they were filming a flashback, Cavill and Chalotra were spotted together during production. That being said, The Witcher season 2 should further explore the romantic elements between Geralt and Yennefer as they both become surrogate parental figures for Ciri.
