Bethesda Softworks has announced Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus, the follow up to 2014’s wildly successful Wolfenstein: The New Order. The trailer for The New Colossus features a Nazified postwar America and plenty of Nazi killing gameplay featuring the series protagonist William “B.J.” Blazkowicz.
After the success of Wolfenstein: The New Order and its expansion The Old Blood, it seemed likely that a sequel was in the works. The trailer features the type of action that fans of the series have become accustomed to with some exciting new improvements.
The trailer begins with parody versions of popular ’50s and ’60s American television shows and movies that have been tinged with the influence of the occupying Nazi forces. We are then introduced to series protagonist William B.J. Blazkowicz, who awakens to his pregnant wife and the facility he was being held in under attack. We are also introduced to who can be assumed at this point to be the main antagonist of The New Colossus, Frau Engel. We’re treated to a view of everyday life in the Nazi occupied version of America, including members of the KKK being asked about the progress on their German lessons and an alarmingly friendly Nazi commander interacting with the locals. The trailer then jumps to Blazkowicz kicking a whole load of Nazi ass decked out in a new battle suit, featuring a stylish bulletproof helmet. B.J. meets up with members of the American resistance and the carnage begins, including all the intimidating Nazi mechs and super soldiers that have come to be associated with the franchise since the soft reboot of the series back in 2014. The action features a variety of new weapons and melee kills, enemy types, and a ride atop giant, fire breathing mechanized dog.
Judging from the gameplay that is featured in the trailer, the action looks to be of the same caliber as the two most recent entries in the Wolfenstein series, albeit with a bit more polish and some promising new features. The weapons look downright awesome, with B.J. dispatching a variety of new enemy types, some simply turning into clouds of gore after being hit. The story looks a bit more fleshed out as well, with characters in the revolution and on the opposite side of the line having loads of personality.
The cast that we are introduced to in the American revolution seem to be fleshed out enough to the point of being interesting; it’d be a waste to not be able to fight with a few of them at some point. The weapons look inspired and generally fun to use, and the new featured enemy types, from towering humanoid mechs to super quick stealth soldiers, look like a fresh challenge for veterans of the series. Overall, the trailer looks to be incredibly promising, continuing the trend of home runs for Bethesda in dealing with the legendary shooting franchise.
Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus will be released October 27, 2017.
