A new variant cover for X Deaths of Wolverine #1 from Marvel Comics shows the titular hero rising from the dead. However, it may not be in a way that fans would expect. After all, Wolverine has been dead before, and he looks surprisingly intact.

X Deaths of Wolverine #1 follows after X Lives of Wolverine #1 – which has the creative team of Benjamin Percy, Joshua Cassara, Frank Martin, and Joe Caramagna. These comics are exploring the past, present, and future of one of Marvel’s most popular mutants – as well as one of the hardest to kill. Now, a new variant is exploring Wolverine’s rise.

Comic artist Stephanie Hans shared her variant cover for the first issue of X Deaths of Wolverine on Twitter. This comic has the creative team of Benjamin Percy, Federico Vicentini, Federico Blee, and Joe Caramagna. The cover art, shared below, shows Wolverine rising from a grave marked by his own headstone. The headstone bears his multiple names: James Howlett, Weapon X, Logan, and finally, Wolverine. This hero has lived for many years and has existed through different timelines, though this series may be instrumental in fleshing out his character history.

X Lives of Wolverine and X Deaths of Wolverine are mirroring one another and releasing alternately. They will both be covering Wolverine’s past and future, as well as how to reconcile his multiple lives. New eras are said to be explored across these parallel series which should provide a lot of fun for fans. These issues are also said to lead to a major turning point for the current era of X-Men comics. Wolverine has gone by many names and he has been a staple of the team for many years, but once more, the fate of mutants may rest on his shoulders. While it doesn’t provide many new details, this cover does show the persistence of Wolverine. He has frequently refused to die, bouncing back from most of what is thrown at him. He’s one of the most fierce and durable mutants in Krakoa. However, of note is the lack of gore present on the hero.

Wolverine has been included in multiple Marvel Zombies titles and has frequently been depicted as a grotesque mess. In this variant, he is very much pieced together and healed up, seemingly ready to jump into action once again. His healing factor is certainly to account for 99 percent of his recoveries and this is one of the most realistic depictions of a grave-rising Wolverine. Even if pushed to the brink, his healing factor usually kicks in and prevents him from truly dying, which would mean he’d look perfectly fine coming out a grave – if not a little dirty from the soil. Fans can see the many eras of Wolverine and see his life – and perhaps even his death – when Marvel Comics’ X Deaths of Wolverine releases January 26.
