Woody Allens Latest Movie May Never Be Released

Woody Allen’s latest movie A Rainy Day in New York finished filming nearly a year ago, but may never be released since Amazon, the film’s distributor, has indefinitely shelved the project.

While there is very little in the way of plot details for the Academy Award-winning filmmaker’s latest movie, A Rainy Day in New York revolves around two people who spend a weekend together in New York. However, once they arrive in the city, a unique series of incidences – as well as rainy weather, per the title – get in the way of their plans. The movie will be one of many movies written and directed by Allen to take take place in New York, following Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, and Annie Hall, which won the Oscar for Best Picture. Now the movie, which stars Timothée Chalamet, Selena Gomez, Elle Fanning, Jude Law, and Diego Luna, is being indefinitely shelved – and may never be released at all.

A Rainy Day in New York was slated for a 2018 release, but Amazon has since backpedaled on a release date entirely, according to Page Six. Amazon did not explain their decision to shelve the movie, and given that Allen will not have any movie to release in either 2018 or 2019, it will ultimately mark the first time since 1982’s A Midsummer Night’s Sex Comedy that Allen did not release at least one movie in a given year. And, despite reports that there was, in fact, a release date set, Amazon stated, “No release date has ever been set for the film.”

Though the movie may never see the light of day, A Rainy Day in New York isn’t the first movie directed by Allen to b released by Amazon. They also released last year’s Wonder Wheel with Kate Winslet and Jim Belushi and 2016’s Cafe Society with Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg. It’s currently unclear whether or not Allen’s upcoming untitled project will be affected.

Amazon has not specified why exactly they decided to shelve the project, though it may have ties to sexual abuse allegations made against Allen by Dylan Farrow, his and Mia Farrow’s adopted daughter (Mia not only worked with Allen on movies like Crimes and Misdemeanors and Alice, but was in a committed relationship with Allen for 12 years). Amazon has not confirmed whether or not the allegations have anything to do with their decision, though the movie did wrap prior to the start of 2017’s #MeToo and Time’s Up movements, which may have prompted their final call.
