The Shadowlands expansion will soon be available in World of Warcraft, and with it comes the massive level squish that will see the top cap brought down from 120 to 50. Thankfully, Blizzard Entertainment has finally revealed more details of what this is going to look like in terms of time spent leveling up, a new starting experience, and changes to Heirloom gear.
Although the new level cap is now level 50, Blizzard has stated that the time it takes to reach it is only about half of the current grind. Basically, this means that leveling a character will still feel as though all the old Heirloom gear experience bonuses are applied automatically.
Heirloom Gear Changes
However, since players have collected so much Heirloom gear over the years, along with upgrades to maintain its viability throughout each expansion, it would be rather odd to simply discard the gear entirely. Instead, Blizzard has reworked all of the Heirloom gear and added four set bonuses that will still help with leveling, but with a shift in focus to alts and rested experience. The new bonuses for all Heirloom gear are:
- (2) Set: Rested experience consumed is reduced by 30%.
- (3) Set: Increases your out-of-combat regeneration in the outdoors, normal dungeons and battlegrounds.
- (4) Set: Gaining a level triggers Burst of Knowledge, dealing Holy damage to nearby enemies and granting you 40% primary stat for 2 minutes. Defeating additional enemies extends this effect, up to 2 additional minutes.
- (6) Set: Rested experience consumed is reduced by an additional 30%.
The focus has clearly shifted from providing major bonuses toward rested experience and should make leveling new characters far easier. With six pieces, rest will be consumed at a rate that is 60% slower than normal, so playing a main character at max level and then working on an alt with rest will yield the most efficient leveling process.
Consumables used for leveling have also been adjusted with this new design in mind. The Monks Peak of Serenity Enlightenment buff will grant rested experience, while the Elixir of Ancient Knowledge, Elixir of the Rapid Mind, and Excess Potion of Accelerated Learning will become Poor quality and no longer usable. Only the Draught of Ten Lands will grant a 10% experience bonus.
The New Starting Experience
Apart from Heirloom gear, the leveling experience has been completely revamped in terms of how one experiences content. Brand new players will go through a short tutorial area in Exile’s Reach and, upon reaching the end and level 10, will begin working on Battle for Azeroth content.
Meanwhile, veteran players may want to choose a different, more nostalgic path. At level 10, they can speak to Chromie to instead level through any other expansion they prefer. Want to level up while playing content from The Burning Crusade or Wrath of the Lich King? Good news, it’s all set up and offers a fantastic way to encourage leveling new characters and to experience older content once again.
Overall, players should find it quick and easy to reach level 50 and, from there, to tackle all the new Shadowlands content.
