The climatic end of the new Sanctum of Domination raid in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands finally shows players the fate of Sylvanas Windrunner. Sanctum of Domination was part of the recent 9.1 update, which was the first major update to World of Warcraft in over 200 days.
Sylvanas Windrunner has become one of the most recognizable faces throughout all of WoW thanks to the character’s longevity. The Banshee Queen first became part of World of Warcraft all the way back in 2002 and her story has continued to evolve over the past two decades. Fan intrigue with Sylvanas only heightened after the events of the Battle for Azeroth in 2018 and with the 9.1 update, Shadowlands has finally answered some of the questions the previous expansion posed.
World of Warcraft’s official YouTube channel recently posted the ending cutscene to the Sanctum of Domination, which is a ten-boss raid that ends with Sylvanas as the final opponent. The cutscene that marks the end of the raid shows the Banshee Queen interacting with a relatively new WoW villain, the Jailer, whom she has been serving for some time. Those wishing to avoid spoilers should not watch the clip until completing Sanctum of Domination.
Unfortunately for developer Blizzard, Sylvanas getting the lost half of her soul restored while being betrayed by the main antagonist did not sit well with much of the community. The cinematic clip on YouTube has more than double the amount of dislikes than likes and many of the comments express frustration that the situation was poorly handled by Blizzard. Much of the WoW community seems to have theorized this is how the Sanctum of Domination might end, but they do not appear thrilled about being right.
Sylvanas has become an iconic character with nearly twenty years of continuous lore that has led up to this point. The Banshee Queen is even getting her own World of Warcraft novel later this year which is meant to be her “definitive story” in the words of Blizzard. Fans hold her in high regard, which undoubtedly contributed somewhat to the disappointment many are now feeling. However when the majority of the World of Warcraft player base is unified in their displeasure with the storytelling decisions, then that likely means it was poorly executed by Blizzard. Whatever the developer’s intentions were, they seemed to have missed the mark with their fans and now only time will tell just how damaging that will become.
