A new trailer for the World War Z video game shows the inclusion of zombie tsunamis made famous by the 2013 film of the same name. Last December it was announced that Saber Interactive was developing a game loosely based off both the film and the book by Max Brooks which started it all. Over the past few months the developer has been doling out trailers and gameplay demos, giving players a taste of what is to come as well as rebuild some hype around the franchise.

World War Z, a four-player co-op shooter, will have to work to distinguish itself from the overly familiar zombie game genre. One difference the game has been promoting is the sheer number of zombies players will have to face. An earlier trailer revealed that the game can feature up to 1,000 sprinting zombies threatening to overwhelm players. Gameplay will focus less on gathering supplies, providing players countless resources they’ll need to fend off the undead hordes. It appears that the game will take some cues from the film, making the focus less on horror and more on action to differentiate from other similar games.

The trailer “Introducing: The Horde” released by Unilad Gaming, shows wave after wave of zombies being gunned down in various locales. At one point the undead are seen making a zombie pile to scale walls, much like they did in the film. The trailer informs players to expect zombies swarms numbering in the hundreds, as well as shows the game’s advanced gore system, the adaptive spawn control, and gives a taste of the different zombie mechanics.

The new World War Z trailer is here 😱

While the game exists in the same universe as the movie, it looks like Saber Interactive will be taking elements from the book. Like Brooks’ novel, the video game is said to be episodic with each new location focusing on different characters. The film centered on the story of Brad Pitt’s Gerry Lane as he tried to solve the zombie pandemic. The book is a collection of individual stories encompassing the entirety of the zombie war, gathered by an agent of United Nations Postwar Commission. Until the game’s release, players will have to guess whether World War Z is a meld of the two narratives or if, much like the movie, only thinly references the original source material.

No specific release date has been given. All the trailer states is that the game will come out at some point next year. With the film’s planned sequel facing numerous delays, the game looks to be Paramount’s attempt to keep interest in the franchise alive. Although the zombie genre does feel overdone, the scenes of zombie swarms filling city streets does paint a terrifying picture and could make World War Z different enough from the competition to make the game exciting. Players will have to wait until 2019 to learn all the game entails. But here’s to hoping fans will get to explore more of the world created in Brooks’ novel or at the very least finally experience the Battle of Yonkers.
