Covenants are one of the most important features that were added in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, and choosing the right one is a difficult task. All four of Shadowlands’ covenants have unique abilities and benefits, meaning that there is an argument for every single choice. Although plenty of players are making their covenant choice based on what abilities are ideal for raiding and other end game content, others can make the decision based off of how the lore and fantasy of the covenant fits their class.

Every class in World of Warcraft has all four covenants available as an option, but the abilities and lore of a class will lend itself best to a specific covenant. The leveling experience in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands allows players to understand what each faction’s specific roll is in the afterlife, and the sorts of aspirations that prospective members should have.

World of Warcraft players can, of course, roleplay their character how they wish no matter the class, but these are the combinations of Shadowlands classes and covenants that, in general, make the most sense from a lore perspective.

The Best Classes For The Kyrians In World of Warcraft: Shadowlands

The first discoverable covenant in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands is the Kyrian, a group that resides in the idyllic world of Bastion. Kyrians are tasked with defending souls as they move through the afterlife, and their roll is held in the highest of esteem. The Kyrians allow only those with pure souls and accomplished lives to join their ranks, and require those aspirants to succeed at many trials in order to truly become and part of the order.

The most obvious class that would fit with the Kyrian requirements and aesthetic are World of Warcraft’s Paladins. These holy warriors are tasked with living lives of justice, as well as giving themselves up to defend others. Most Paladins would likely seek to continue serving others in death, and working their way up as a Kyrian would accomplish just that. Other classes that would work well as kyrians include WoW: Shadowlands’ Monks, a group of honorable and even-tempered fighters, as well as Holy Priests, who dedicate their life to healing others and worshipping the purity of the light.

The Best Classes For The Necrolords In World of Warcraft: Shadowlands

The Necrolords, who inhabit Maldraxxus in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, serve as the army and defense force within the Shadowlands, and as such their ranks are made up of those who thirst for battle, both in life and in death. Despite the reputation that Maldraxxus might garner as an evil place, plenty of noble spirits can find a home with the Necrolords. The Necrolords of Maldraxxus value bravery above all else, and must be prepared, if called to action, to defend the Shadowlands.

The most obvious fit for Shadowlands’ Necrolords are Warriors. Warriors are career soldiers that are not afraid to solve problems using their weapons. The Necrolords appreciate bravery above all else, and having a veteran of either the Alliance or Horde on their side would be welcome. Death Knights can also find a home in Maldraxxus, since they have many similar qualities to the Warrior and have shown a willingness to put themselves in danger to fight for Azeroth. They have the added benefit of controlling the undead, something that meshes well with the many necromancers that inhabit Maldraxxus.

Lastly, although they are not an exact fit, Mages may find that the powerful liches and sorcerers in Maldraxxus are worthy of their abilities. Not every fighter in World of Warcraft needs to wield a weapon, and the potent frost magic of a Mage would certainly fit the Necrolords aesthetic

The Best Classes For The Night Fae In World of Warcraft: Shadowlands

Ardenweald serves as the afterlife for the various spirits of nature in World of Warcraft, and the Night Fae play an important roll in taking care of the world. The Night Fae dedicate their existence to serving the spirits that pass through Ardenweald, doing their best to heal and protect souls that suffer from nightmare and injury. Although the Night Fae do not concern themselves with many humanoid spirits as other covenants do, characters with a connection to nature may feel their calling is the most important of all.

The Night Fae may have the obvious class fit in all of World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, with that class being the Druid. Druids already dedicate themselves to the preservation of nature in life, and so to serve nature in the afterlife seems reasonable. The Night Fae also includes a faction known as the Wild Hunt, and this group is charged with the physical defense of the forest from malicious threats.

This makes the Hunter an excellent WoW class to play with this covenant, and alongside Druid, both fit into the forests of Ardenweald with ease. The connection that World of Warcraft’s Shaman have forged with nature, and their devotion to defending the balance of the world, may also make them a reasonable choice to join with the Night Fae.

The Best Classes For The Venthyr In World of Warcraft: Shadowlands

Revendreth, the final zone in World of Warcraft: Shadowlands, is the home of wayward souls that must seek redemption. These souls committed various evil deeds in their lives, and must atone for those sins if they hope to avoid The Maw. The Venthyr are the covenant that is charged with a spirit’s rehabilitation, and many of their ranks were once souls that needed to atone themselves. For this reason, characters that have done wrong in their life make the best prospects to become Venthyr.

Characters of any class can have a reason for seeking redemption, but the class they may need to prioritize atonement is the Demon Hunter. Demon Hunters use the fel magic of the Burning Legion in order to power their abilities, and the use of this forbidden magic may make understand the wrong that others have done. Warlocks are in a similar position, and their practice of Demonology has always been questionable in the eyes of other World of Warcraft classes. Both of these classes tow the line between good and evil, and therefore would make perfect choices. Lastly, Rogues are known to live a life of crime and deceit, meaning those character’s may have the strained morality that makes a great Venthyr.

There are legitimate reasons for any class to join any covenant, so players should feel free to choose whatever group appeals to them while leveling. Many of the best aesthetics picks for covenants are not actually the best mechanical fits, and players can still pick their World of Warcraft: Shadowlands covenant based on abilities rather than lore. At the end of the day, all four covenants are working towards the same goal, the defeat of The Jailer, and no matter what covenant a character chooses they will still have a chance to face him.
