Despite being less than two minutes long, the Hit List trailer for WWE 2K22 reveals a lot about the upcoming game. Rey Mysterio’s 2K Showcase, the return of GM mode, and the introduction of a new feature called MyFaction are some of the highlights of the video. But not every reveal in the trailer was as obvious as those.

There are several smaller details in the piece that many fans miss while watching the fast-paced video. It’s a shame, too, since the hard to notice things are some of the most interesting. Don’t worry, though, as these are the important ones.

10 New Defensive Options

It’s fair to say that WWE 2K20 was one of the least popular wrestling video games of all time. While the title’s many technical issues rightly received most of the blame, the new control scheme didn’t help matters. So, it’s good news that the developers are changing the controls again.

During the trailer, they showed a quick shot of the basic controls on Xbox. When the controller appears, you can see that a block and a dodge function now exist. This means that you’ll no longer have to rely on reversals to protect yourself.

9 Light And Heavy Attacks

Something else that the new control scheme revealed is the inclusion of light and heavy attacks. Many beat ’em ups and RPGs have similar systems for their close-quarters combat, but it’s new to the WWE 2K series.

In previous instalments, you only had one strike button, and in some cases, you could hold it down to perform a stronger one. Perhaps the heavy attack will now function in a similar way to the strong strike. The change could make a big impact on combos.

8 HUD Changes

For several years, the HUD in the 2K series hasn’t changed too much. It’s included a health bar, a percentage for momentum, a stamina gauge, reversal slots, and a silhouette to show how much damage each limb has taken. However, the Hit List trailer shows that WWE 2K22 has altered or removed a lot of those things.

The health bar and silhouette are pretty much the same, but everything else is different. So much so that it’s hard to tell what everything is. However, when Bobby Lashley hits the Dominator, the blue bars disappear, meaning they could be signatures. Also, the yellow bar goes up when he hits the move, so that might be the momentum gauge.

7 Popularity Returns For MyGM

For several years, fans have felt that the return of GM mode could be among the things needed to save the series. And to everyone’s delight, the popular mode is back, now called MyGM. The trailer gives a sneak peek at the returning mode. It looks very different, which comes as no surprise since its last appearance was back in Smackdown Vs. Raw 2008.

Yet, one thing that seems to have returned with the mode is popularity. In several shots of the trailer, you can see the words ‘pop,’ and it’s fair to assume that this is referring to popularity. The feature was extremely important in the original GM mode, so it’ll be interesting to see if that remains the case with MyGM.

6 Real Photos For Superstars

While it isn’t exactly hidden in the trailer, you might not register that WWE 2K22 uses real photos for the wrestlers. The series has always gone back and forth on whether they should use in-game renders or actual images of each superstar for the menu screens. They’ve clearly opted for the latter this time.

The main issue with this choice is that it makes any created wrestlers look odd when they’re next to a photo of a real person. However, a lot of the criticism about the graphics of 2K20 was a result of using renders. For instance, the menu image of Becky Lynch looked horrible, but her actual in-game model wasn’t that bad. Therefore, the change isn’t too surprising.

5 Interference In MyGM

At this point, it’s not exactly clear how much MyGM will differ from the original General Manager Mode. One alteration, though, has already been revealed by the trailer. You can now set up interferences for matches. Previously, you were able to interfere in other shows, yet not directly in contests themselves.

This could be an extremely useful tool, as one of the problems with the original mode was that it was hard to keep feuds going without having the two rivals face off every single week. Interference could give you another option to prevent a rivalry from cooling off.

4 Universe Mode Match Record

Universe Mode has been one of the biggest features in the WWE games of the 2010s. And the Hit List trailer shows that it’s not going anywhere. The mode will likely have several alterations, though. A small but great addition is noticeable in the trailer itself.

During the shot of the menu screen for Universe Mode, you can see a W-L-D match record for AJ Styles. WWE’s main rivals AEW use a similar record system for their company, and it’s also prevalent in boxing and MMA. In 2K22, it’ll be a helpful way to keep track of how every member of your roster is doing.

3 Is That Buddy Murphy?

Buddy Murphy was one of many wrestlers to be released by WWE in 2021. Therefore, as with everyone who’s not currently working with the company, most expected him to be excluded from 2K22. Yet, in the part of the trailer that shows off the MyRise story mode, he might be in the background. The scene in question is the one where Seth Rollins, Austin Theory, and Ali are fighting what seems to be the protagonist. On the edge of the screen, you can notice an arm and some tights of an unknown superstar.

The gear looks very similar to the ones Murphy wore when he was aligned with Rollins – who himself is wearing the attire he donned at that time. Thus, there’s reason to believe that the individual is Murphy, and he’s helping his former mentor. If it is him, though, that doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s in the final version of the game.

2 You’re Able To Play Universe Mode As One Superstar?

WWE 2K22 10 Details Everyone Missed In The Hit List Trailer

Universe Mode has always served as a decent sandbox that allows you to play as you see fit. Some fans opt to control one superstar and only play their matches. While you’ve always had the freedom to do that, it has never been a designated feature – perhaps until now.

While the trailer is showing the Universe Mode menu, Triple H appears and says, “Now that your superstar’s been selected, select “Next Match” to jump into the show and into AJ Styles’s match. Good Luck!” That piece of text seems to indicate that the person playing is only controlling The Phenomenal One. Hopefully, you’re aren’t forced into this, but choosing one person to play as would be a nice option.

1 NXT Stars Confirmed

Every time there’s a new WWE game on the horizon, fans are always anxious to know what new faces will be included. These days anyone who’s been on the main roster for a while is guaranteed. Yet, it’s not always clear who from NXT will make the cut. The Hit List Trailer, however, confirmed some names.

Both Raquel Gonzalez and Kay Lee Ray are shown in the MyRise sequence, beating on the protagonist. And in the match card of the GM Mode, you can see that Joaquin Wilde is also making his WWE 2K debut. Austin Theory, Dominik Mysterio, and the returning MVP are also in the trailer, but they were expected to be in the game anyway.
