WWE 2K22 has officially launched and many of you will currently be deciding whether it falls into the same category as the disastrous WWE 2K20, if it’s a marked improvement on what many to believe to be the worst wrestling game of all time, or if it’s even a complete 180 and is the best WWE game in decades. Most will likely agree that 2K22 falls firmly into that middle category – it’s not the worst game ever, but it’s not a masterpiece either. It’s fine. It easily hopped over the low bar set by 2K20, but it isn’t going to live long in the memory like No Mercy and Here Comes The Pain have.

Enough on what isn’t that great about WWE 2K22 and more on that is. Although pretty basic, I have found myself hopelessly addicted to MyGM, as expected. Superstar mode is also a cool new addition to Universe mode, allowing you to take control of one wrestler and navigate WWE’s choppy waters rather than having to oversee the entire company. However, as was the case before 2K inexplicably decided to scrap it, Showcase is 2K22’s crown jewel.

For those unfamiliar with WWE 2K’s Showcase, each year the studio would select a Superstar or a period in WWE history and create a series of moments and matches allowing those who bought the game to relive it and play through them. Previous subjects have included Stone Cold Steve Austin, and my personal favorite, the history of WrestleMania. Basically, a story mode that allowed you to play through 30 years of WrestleMania. Yes, it was as good as it sounds.

One of the first things revealed about WWE 2K22 was that Showcase mode would return, and Rey Mysterio would be its subject. Mysterio started his career all the way back in 1989 and is still wrestling today, so there was certainly plenty of content for the developers at 2K to choose from. That’s why fans were a little disappointed when the list of matches that made the cut had some glaring omissions. No Royal Rumble win, no crowning moment in the main event of WrestleMania, and just one match prior to Mysterio signing with WWE.

There is a good reason for those omissions. Since Mysterio entered the Rumble he would win at number two, it stands to reason there are people in that match who 2K isn’t able to include in the game. Off the top of my head, Goldust, Eugene, and Chris Benoit were in the match, none of whom can be in 2K22 for various reasons. The same goes for the aforementioned WrestleMania match as it includes Kurt Angle who also isn’t in this year’s game. While that’s disappointing on paper, you’ll realize within a few matches of Mysterio’s Showcase that they won’t be missed.

2K22’s Showcase, like the ones that have come before it, tells a story. A story rooted in Mysterio’s close bond with Eddie Guerrero. Yes, Mysterio won those matches above for the late Hall Of Famer, but with the luchador guiding you through the Showcase, the thread it follows makes a lot of sense and makes Showcase not only as good as it ever was but maybe even better. Not just because of the story told, and that it tracks the career of one of the most likable people in wrestling history, but the transitions between hearing that story and playing through it yourself are done incredibly well.

Unless you dive into Showcase too early, that is. When you play a game for the first time, it makes sense to start up its story before you do anything else. That will be where you learn the ropes, and with a completely new set of controls, learning the ropes is something even the most seasoned wrestling fan is going to have to do in 2K22. That is certainly possible in Showcase as, like all modes, the game will stop and tell you how to do simple and then more complex things as you’re about to do them for the first time. However, I would strongly recommend not learning those ropes in Showcase.

While the transitions from real footage to gameplay make Showcase smoother than ever before, the objectives renew every time you complete them, which very much takes you out of the moment if you don’t know what you have to press next. Some are simple. Landing a combo or throwing your opponent into the ropes. However, that just makes stopping to learn how to perform those simple tasks even more annoying as you try to immerse yourself into some of the best bits from Rey’s career. Play a few matches in Exhibition – or simply ‘Play’, as it’s now called – but don’t try to learn 2K22’s overhauled controls while working your way through the Showcase. It simply won’t be the experience it is meant to be if you do that.

Whatever you think of 2K22, you’ll be hard-pushed to critique the return of Showcase mode providing you don’t play it right away. It’s the type of story mode very few other sports games can offer because professional wrestling is a sport that is able to tell stories like no other. While 2K22 hasn’t set the world on fire right off the bat, here’s hoping it has done enough to repair its damaged reputation, and that the studio realizes Showcase will have had a huge role to play in that. Plus, if there’s going to be a WWE 2K23, and it’s going to have Showcase, base it on WCW’s invasion of WWE, please. I know everyone hates it, but if someone from 2K is reading this, just do it for me.
