The WWE SummerSlam PPV is one of the biggest wrestling events of the year, and fans are already getting to watch exciting matches broadcast from the WWE ThunderDome. However, a strange appearance from a fan-favorite Pokemon has a lot of fans both amused and confused during this year’s exciting SummerSlam.

Anyone who knows anything about WWE is aware of how pro wrestling often thrives off of gimmicky, odd things meant to wow a crowd. Fans are used to seeing a Ugandan headhunter like Kamala and other wacky personas, but it’s not every day Pikachu shows up to a match. One of the ThunderDome screens showed a large Pikachu face, and it brought smiles to a lot of fans’ faces.

Fans can show their faces on screens in the ThunderDome, and one fan decided to put Pikachu’s face up instead of displaying their own during the Raw Tag Team Championships. Social media latched onto this unusual occurrence quickly, with many fans congratulating whoever it was that chose to amuse the crowd with such an enormous Pikachu. The flurry of enthusiasm for everyone’s favorite electric Pokemon boosted the #SummerSlam2020 tag, too.

This year’s SummerSlam was moved from Boston due to COVID, and some people expressed doubts that the WWE should even hold the event, especially after a few WWE personnel tested positive for the disease. There’s still a healthy amount of concern for the wrestlers and how they may fare during COVID. However, most people watching the event do so from the comfort of their own homes, especially during a pandemic.

Pikachu’s appearance wasn’t the oddest thing to happen with the 2020 SummerSlam, since the WWE partnered with World of Tanks for the event. It’s certainly a weird time to be a wrestling fan, since big sold-out shows are a thing of the past right now, so most people are seeing bare studios in the backgrounds of matches. Video games are turning out to be a big source of branding for WWE right now, and although it didn’t arrange for Pikachu to show up today, the unofficial crossover can’t be a bad thing for marketing.

Overall, getting to see Pikachu at a WWE event is one of those weird things that could only happen in times like these, but at least this is a harmless, fun thing that just makes people laugh and tweet about it.
