CrossfireX’s launch across Xbox platforms on February 10 went almost completely unnoticed. Only a few first reviews with not-so-great scores, the total lack of marketing, and lots of negative feedback on Reddit. But what’s more surprising is that some players still can’t play the story mode several days after launch.
When announcing two single-player campaigns created by Remedy, Smilegate clarified all Xbox Game Pass subscribers can get free access to Operation Catalyst, and have to get Operation Spectre separately for $10 (or as part of the Ultimate Package for $29.99). However, because of some nasty bug, many players reported they can’t access Operation Catalyst via their subscription, as both operations are closed behind the paywall.
The devs were quick to react, saying they’re aware of the issue and working to deliver on what’s promised. Yet at the time of writing, Operation Catalyst still can’t be accessed on Xbox consoles for some Xbox Game Pass members, myself included. I’ve been trying to play the story campaign throughout the entire weekend, constantly expecting the issue to be resolved day after day, but still getting nowhere.
What’s even more disturbing is the much-needed fix might arrive even later than you think. So far, there have been no updates released for CrossfireX at all, and the team hinted that it’ll “take some time.” According to the official website, the first update is planned only for early March. This could mean we won’t be able to play the story on Game Pass for another two or three weeks if the devs bundle this fix with that update rather than sending out a hotfix first.
The support team said they’re getting “an overwhelming amount of feedback from the community,” and executive producer Sooro Boo reached out to personally apologize for the current state of the game. “We have inadvertently disappointed many of our players and fans. There is simply no excuse for this,” he wrote. “We will continue to be transparent and engage with you, our valued players, and hope to regain your trust again.”
In his statement, ‘Mr. Boo’ highlighted some primary issues the team will address shortly, including controller sensitivity problems and balance improvements. No exact dates for those were given, and the Operation Catalyst access issue wasn’t even mentioned.
Let’s hope we won’t need to wait until March to finally experience Operation Catalyst via Xbox Game Pass. In the meantime, CrossfireX multiplayer is available for free across two generations of Xbox consoles.
