According to new research, the top three console subscription services – Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Now, and EA Play – saw a combined revenue increase of 142% in October 2020 compared to last year. That revenue was driven by an increase in subscribers, which also jumped 113%.

2020 has been catastrophic for most industries, but it’s been surprisingly kind to most publishers in the world of gaming. The latest report from Safe Betting Sites examined the growth of the gaming sector over the past year, focusing specifically on the boom in game streaming services. Xbox Game Pass makes up most of the 142% growth mentioned above, although Sony is projected to run away with overall console sales through the end of the year. IDC, a global market intelligence firm, estimates PS5 will reach 5 million consoles sold, while Series X|S will lag behind with just 3.8 million.

Both Microsoft and Sony have very different business strategies – something that’s readily apparent when you look at the most played games through November on both PS5 and Series X. Another study from Newzoo discovered four of the top ten most played games on PS5 were console exclusives, while half of the top ten list for Xbox players was comprised of Game Pass games. It’s clear that Microsoft is trying to amass an impressive roster for its subscription service, while Sony is heavily focused on individual exclusives.

Forecast for console games in general is optimistic, too, seeing an increasing from $45.2 billion to $51.2 billion. The demand for the elusive PS5 and Series X is through the roof, with scalpers asking ridiculous prices for those desperate to get their hands on the new systems.

The entire report paints a very positive picture of where the industry is heading in 2021. New consoles always bring about a wave of excitement, although it seems analysts didn’t realize how dramatically that would translate to sales. 2020 was certainly a rough year, but at least the games were good as ever.
