Have you ever plugged a headset into your Xbox controller and wondered what stupid design is making it continue to play out of the TV at the same time? If you have, you’re in luck because Microsoft is finally working on a fix.

If you plug a headset into an Xbox controller now, audio will come out through both the headset and any connected speaker. There’s no way to turn it off beyond muting the TV altogether. It’s not clear why this is the case as it’s specifically an Xbox thing, but gamers have been complaining about it for some time.

Thankfully, it seems that Microsoft has realised how annoying the design issue is and is working towards a fix. As reported by KnowTechie, the latest Xbox Insider update post reveals that the feature is currently being rolled out to Xbox Insiders for testing. The post says, “A new streamlined audio settings experience is now available with new features such as “Mute Speaker audio when headset attached” and a new “Audio testing & details” page”.

It seems that Xbox Insiders can currently turn on a setting that instantly mutes whatever speaker audio is coming through when a headset is turned on. The feature is only available to the Alpha Skip-Ahead ring of Xbox Insiders at the moment, but considering how requested it has been and how quickly these updates get rolled out past Xbox Insiders it’s likely that it’ll be arriving for all Xbox users soon.

Although the speaker muting is the highlight here, it’s not the only thing that is currently being tested by Xbox Insiders. The same post reveals that a suite of new colourblind filters is coming for Xbox Series owners. These filters are currently being tested and were made with the “intention of enabling those with colour blindness or colour vision deficiency to explore more current games as well as titles in the Xbox back catalogue that were previously colour blind inaccessible.”
