Xbox has confirmed the existence of its smaller Series S as well as how much it will cost – $299.

Sony and Microsoft have been drip-feeding the gaming world information about its next-gen consoles throughout the bulk of 2020. What they look like, what games will be coming at launch and beyond, information all of us want to know in order to make an informed decision about which we are going to buy. However, neither company has been willing to reveal one of the most important factors of all, the price.

The assumption is that this has all been one giant game of chicken. If one company were to reveal the price of its console first, that would potentially allow the other to undercut it. The thing is, although no definite release date has been confirmed, holiday 2020 is fast approaching. Either Xbox or PlayStation had to blink first, and it would appear that Xbox has indeed started blinking.

Late on Monday night, a new leak suggested that the Series X will cost $499, $100 less than other leaks have suggested. Therein lies the problem. There have been so many leaks claiming so many different prices that nobody knows who to believe at this point, if anyone. The leak also included a price for the Xbox Series S, a smaller version of Microsoft’s next-gen console rumored to be released at the same time. Xbox has now confirmed the second half of that leak to be true, also revealing that the extremely compact Series S will cost $299.

The Monday night leaks were rooted in so much evidence that Xbox didn’t really have much choice when it came to revealing the Series S. The leaks even included a short clip demonstrating exactly how small the console is. Less than half the size of the Series X by the looks of things. Xbox claims that the Series S is the “smallest Xbox ever”. It certainly looks like that’s the case.

As for the leaks surrounding the Series X’s price, Xbox is yet to confirm whether they are true or not. Since the Series S information to come from the very same leak was accurate, it seems likely. $499 also sounds like a fair price for the larger, more powerful next-gen console. Xbox has not confirmed what the difference will be in performance between the Series X and Series S, but if the former is indeed $499, $200 is quite the price gap.
