The Xbox team is working to ensure the Xbox Series X boosts all backwards compatible games at launch. Recently, a page listing for the Xbox Series X appeared on Microsoft’s online store, sparking speculation pointing to the possibility of an imminent release date announcement and price detailing, though, nothing has been confirmed by Microsoft or Xbox Game Studios. Regarding the next-generation console’s price, one analyst predicts it may be more affordable than gamers believe, possibly less expensive than Sony’s PlayStation 5.

Backwards compatibility has given gamers the ability to play older titles on newer consoles, returning them to a nostalgic period with graphics that were marvelous for their time and enhanced on systems such as the Xbox One X. Xbox’s backwards compatibility feature logged over 1 billion hours of playtime as of May 2018, signifying the importance and popularity of the program across the industry.

According to Xbox Wire, the Xbox Series X will boost all backwards compatible games at launch. The older games will run with “the full power of the CPU, GPU, and SSD.” This means the console will not use a boost mode or downclocking and every game will be enhanced through the system’s modern hardware. Moreover, due to the system’s custom NVME SSD, backwards compatible titles will see a reduction “in in-game load times.” Xbox Series X will also automatically add HDR support to its catalogue of backwards compatible games using a new HDR reconstruction technique innovated by the Xbox Advanced Technology Group – this technique not only works on Xbox One titles on the Xbox Series X, but also games from the original Xbox and Xbox 360.

Furthermore, the Xbox Series X will feature an option to double the frame rate of some backwards compatible games, such as an increase from 30 FPS to 60 FPS or even 60 FPS to 120 FPS. These frame rate enhancements work in unison with playing games at higher resolutions. The team is focused on ensuring gamers will be able to play titles from all four Xbox generations – Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. The same group who brought backwards compatibility to Xbox One is working on the feature for Xbox Series X, utilizing new techniques and technology to enhance older titles on the new console. To perpetuate this ambition, the team at Xbox Game Studios has logged “more than 100,000 hours of play testing… thousands of games are already playable on Xbox Series X today, from the biggest blockbusters to cult classics and fan favorites.” Per Xbox Wire, the switch between generations is also “seamless” and there will have been over 200,000 hours of testing by the time the console launches in holiday 2020.

Backwards compatibility was a feature gamers sorely missed with the launch of the Xbox One in 2013. It took Microsoft five to six years before they implemented it, and while it’s now one of the most heavily used features on the Xbox One, it debuted towards the end of the Xbox One generation. It appears Xbox Game Studios has learned from this shortcoming and is correcting the issue before the Xbox Series X even launches. Bugs and performance issues are inevitable at the start of a new console generation, just as updated versions of the system are also a given (Xbox One S, Xbox One X, etc.), but at least team Xbox is learning from the past.
