In light of the upcoming Halloween holiday, Xbox showcased video game posters with visuals reminiscent of classic horror films. Xbox is celebrating its 20th anniversary in November, ushering in various special events and promotions – such as artistic homages to some of its popular series, special offers, and more.

One of Xbox’s anniversary celebrations is a three-month-long series of video game launches on Xbox Game Pass. The platform will welcome new releases – such as Halo Infinite and Forza Horizon 5 – in addition to older titles coming to Game Pass for the first time. Minecraft will be featured on Xbox Game Pass on November 2, and Microsoft Flight Simulator: Game of the Year Edition is set to arrive on November 18. In a similarly festive vein, Xbox redesigned its website to incorporate the Xbox 360 dashboard’s blade menu.

Xbox published several video game posters, imagining various titles’ box art as if they were horror movies. The Twitter thread featured the game franchises Halo, Psychonauts, Far Cry, DOOM, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Grounded and Sea of Thieves. For Halo, Xbox reimagined the game using visuals from the poster for creepy 2002 movie The Ring. The Psychonauts 2 poster aptly mimicked Alfred Hitchcock’s classic thriller Psycho, whereas Far Cry 6 got a revamped look based off the adaptation of the Stephen King novel Cujo (featuring the game’s comparatively cuter Dachshund, Chorizo).

DOOM Eternal is the last game featured in Xbox’s post, and it took on the persona of yet another iconic Stephen King adaptation, The Shining. The artwork puts franchise protagonist Doom Slayer in the position of the film’s (eventually madness-induced) main character Jack Torrance, who – in this scene – breaks down a door in an attempt to kill his wife. Xbox’s poster depicts Doom Slayer doing the same series of actions, but his victim is appropriately playable DOOM Eternal demon The Revenant.

While many gaming companies – including some of Xbox’s own titles – are celebrating spooky season by implementing Halloween-themed events and updates into their games, the simple visuals of these horror-movie-themed video game posters are a simple and festive way to pay homage to the holiday. Combining video games with other forms of pop culture highlights the overlapping themes or narratives found all throughout visual media, and enforces video games aren’t exempt from this exchange of ideas. In light of video game franchises like Super Mario moving to the silver screen, perhaps these games will be adapted as real horror movies on day.
