X-Men: The Animated Series is officially being rebooted for Disney+ and will begin streaming in 2023. Back before the X-Men were the stars of 20th Century Fox’s massively popular live-action movie franchise, the mutants’ popularity beyond comics rose thanks to their use in other forms of media. This included X-Men: The Animated Series, which debuted in 1992. The series followed the X-Men for five seasons and featured some of the biggest mutants in Marvel history.

Originally created by Eric Lewald, Sidney Iwanter, and Mark Edens, X-Men: The Animated Series became a huge hit during the 1990s. Fans of the show loved how it brought some of the characters’ best comic stories to life in a new way, and most viewers were disappointed to learn of its cancelation in 1997 after 76 episodes. X-Men: The Animated Series’ continued popularity has left many to hope that a revival would one day happen, especially after Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century and the show being made available on Disney+.

As part of Disney+ Day, Marvel Studios and Disney+ confirmed a reboot of X-Men: The Animated Series. The series is currently known as X-Men ’97 and will debut on Disney+ sometime in 2023. According to additional information shared by The Wrap, X-Men ’97 will pick up where X-Men: The Animated Series left off. It will also bring back original voice actors Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith, and Alyson Court. News of the reboot was first reported by Geek Culture.

X-Men ’97 represents the latest effort from Marvel Studios to expand its reach into animated content. Phase 4 and Disney+ brought their first foray into this medium with Marvel’s What If…?, which was already renewed for season 2. Disney+ Day came with announcements of several other animated Marvel shows too, but the X-Men: The Animated Series reboot should be different from the rest. Since X-Men ’97 is continuing the story of the original show, it should be separate from the MCU continuity. There is a chance Marvel could use the multiverse to loosely tie X-Men: The Animated Series to its other shows, but this should be a show meant for fans of the original series first and foremost.

It should be quite interesting to see how X-Men ’97 continues X-Men: The Animated Series’ story too. The original show’s ending saw Charles Xavier leave Earth with Lilandra, the queen of the Shi’ar empire, due to a deadly disease that she could cure. This means that X-Men ’97 will pick up at a time when Professor X is not on Earth to lead the X-Men. The finale also saw Magneto stop his attempt for world domination out of respect for Charles and stand with the X-Men as Professor X left. In any case, the continuation of X-Men: The Animated Series should be an exciting adventure for fans to experience in 2023.
