Marvel’s Captain America is one of, if not the most famous patriotic superheroes ever created – but he doesn’t represent the entire Marvel world, and the X-Men have decided to fix that issue with their own national hero. Over the years, Captain America eventually became a defender of countries other than the United States, and eventually stylized himself as a defender of Earth – albeit one who wore the Stars and Stripes on his costume. But in the upcoming X-Men #6, mutants worldwide have a Captain America of their own in the form of Captain Krakoa – replacing Cyclops as the team leader.

In the 2010s, the X-Men team (and brand) had fallen on hard times. The Inhumans vs. X-Men and Death of X storylines seriously hurt the standing of mutants worldwide. Outside the Marvel Universe, readers were worried that the increased prominence of the Inhumans in comics would eventually lead to the X-Men being phased out of the lineup of major heroes entirely. The X-Men soft reboot in 2018 laid those fears to rest; the mutant population of Earth had now settled on Krakoa, an island nation of their own – and a much more pragmatic Charles Xavier was willing to defend it at all costs, even giving the rest of the world life-saving medicine and advanced technology in exchange for Krakoa’s inclusion into the United Nations…and a promise from the other countries to leave her mutant inhabitants alone.

A new team of X-Men was formed, consisting of Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Wolverine, Rogue, Synch, Polaris and Sunfire. But the cover of issue #6 of the new X-Men series reveals a new hero: Captain Krakoa. Cyclops is conspicuously absent on the cover, and Captain Krakoa has taken his place. Marvel has yet to reveal the Captain’s true identity behind the mask, though – meaning the mutant patriotic version of Captain America could be an entirely new character – or an old teammate with a new identity.

It’s entirely possible that Captain Krakoa is Cyclops, but using a new heroic identity. Captain Krakoa does have a visor, but it isn’t tinted red, however, and the absence of ruby-quartz in Scott Summer’s visors and sunglasses render him unable to focus and control his powerful mutant concussive blasts. Judging by the cover art, it also appears that Captain Krakoa can fly, a feat Cyclops cannot accomplish unless given the power via an Iron Man-type suit with flight technology.

If Captain Krakoa isn’t Cyclops, who is? What are Captain Krakoa’s exact powers, strengths, weaknesses – and most importantly, reason for joining the team? If Captain Krakoa truly is the X-Men’s version of Captain America, the hero will truly be a force for good in the mutant community, but the use of the mask is certainly disquieting.
