Sega is happy to announce that Yakuza: Like a Dragon, the RPG spin-off of its popular Yakuza series, will be releasing this November for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. In addition to that, a PS5 version is in the works for release later in the year (likely in December). Xbox gamers will be able to utilize Xbox Smart Delivery to upgrade their copy once they change hardware and a similar system is being planned for Sony’s next-generation machine.
If you’re looking to secure your copy now, pre-orders should be live with a couple of different editions to choose from. Those opting for a physical package will be able to nab the regular or “Day Ichi” editions to put on their shelves. The only real difference is that the Ichi version (which is Japanese for One) will come housed in a steelbook. Digital pre-orders will have the choice between the “Hero” and “Legendary Hero” editions that come with a bunch of extra costumes and jobs for your characters.
If you’ve always been interested in the series but aren’t a fan of reading subtitles, Like a Dragon will be the first game in the proper Yakuza series to feature an English dub. Not only that, but acclaimed actor George Takei will be voicing Masumi Arakawa, patriarch of the Arakawa family. You can check out a sample of his work in the trailer below.
When we learned that Yakuza: Like a Dragon would be releasing on the Xbox Series X, I had a feeling it would be a launch title in the west. If Microsoft was going to go out of its way to get the series on Game Pass and secure a next-generation port, it only made sense to have it coincide with the release of its new console.
You could say it’s disappointing that we have to wait until November, but Yakuza games are almost always worth the wait. You can count the number of bad ones on a single hand and with a few fingers removed. Each entry has something worth digging into, not to mention they’re just plain fun.
I’m not sure I’ll ever make use of the English dub, but it doesn’t sound bad. It’s cool to see George Takei in the credits, too, and I like that Sega even brought back Greg Chun from Judgment’s dub. Now we just need to play the waiting game.
