Warning: This article contains spoilers for Marauders #3!

The X-Men are already expanding their mutant nation, taking ownership of another island. Jonathan Hickman’s X-Men relaunch has seen the mutant race settle on the living island of Krakoa, using Krakoan flowers – and a telepathic nudge from Emma Frost – to persuade the United Nations to approve the existence of their new homeland.

The mutant race has been expanding at speed, largely because Charles Xavier had figured out how to resurrect dead mutants. As a result, the X-Men are partway through resurrecting all the 16.5 million mutants slaughtered on Genosha, and it’s surely only a matter of time before they run out of space on Krakoa. The resurrection protocols have been temporarily put on hold after the assassination of Charles Xavier, but Jean Grey is preparing to use Cerebro to bring him back to life and get back to raising the countless mutant dead.

Marauders #3 has revealed that the X-Men are planning to expand to another island, in the middle of the Atlantic. It includes a note from a secret organization who’s monitoring the mutants, and they reveal that the Marauders made a stop in the North Atlantic at a location called Island M. Crucially, in one panel Sebastian Shaw drops a hint as to the purpose of these clandestine visits to Island M. “Island-nations in two oceans with an extended territory around this planet and others will need a navy, a coast guard, and… nonterrestrial personnel.” The clear implication is that the Quiet Council of Krakoa dream of multiple mutant nations, not just one.

Yes The XMen Are Creating Another [SPOILER] Already

Island M is an important location in X-Men history. Found in the Bermuda Triangle, it is home to a city that predates human civilization, and possibly even the human race itself. The inhabitants were creatures known as the Ancients, monstrous beings possessed of phenomenal power, but they were ultimately forced to leave Earth. There’s been some speculation that these were the so-called “Old Ones,” beings like Chthon who ruled Earth in ages past. The island sank beneath the waves, but in modern times was raised by Magneto as the base for his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. The island’s eldritch energies made it difficult to monitor through technological means, allowing Magneto to mask his activities from his enemies.

It’s fascinating to see the mutant race plan to expand at this kind of rate, and Island M is a logical second nation; they can settle there surreptitiously, and then present it as a fait accompli to the United Nations. Ironically, though, it looks as though some human espionage agencies are already aware something’s going on at Island M – and it’s only a matter of time before the X-Men’s secrecy becomes a problem.
