There have been multiple rumors regarding the controller for the upcoming PlayStation 5 console, including one that essentially described it as a big block with a screen. Although we have yet to see for sure what the actual PS5 controller looks like, new patents from Sony provide suggestions for what the next DualShock controller will look like.
Previous filed patents have shown that the PS5 controller may look a lot like the current DualShock controller design, though the controller is thought to be beefier and larger in design. While the button and joystick layout is mostly identical, newly filed patents show that the PlayStation button is to be removed from the controller.
Furthermore, the controller, as presented in new images for the patented PS5 controller design, may ultimately have buttons on the back of it in addition to those on the face of the controller. In specific, the PS5 controller may have four additional buttons on its back, paired off on either side of the controller. Two of the buttons will be larger-sized while the other two will be smaller by comparison. There will be a small and large button on both sides of the back of the controller, as well.
According to the patent, each of the back buttons has unique functionalities. For example, the larger back buttons are described as being akin to knobs, which may dictate the length of the handles of the controller. Seemingly, this would be a great functionality for those who have larger hands and need a proper adjustment as such.
However, it is unclear what the smaller back buttons will do.
Beyond everything, it should be taken into consideration that the patent described above is a utility patent. Further, the patent might apply to something else besides the controller for the upcoming PS5. However, this possibility doesn’t seem that likely given that the PS5 is on its way and will likely release within the next year.
Whatever the design of the PS5 controller, hopefully, we will soon get some concrete information as to what will be our vehicle for experiencing the next generation of gaming.
